Has a date been settled upon? Do you want this ride posted elsewhere? I can link to this thread on V-Strom Ontario, IBAR Ontario and Meetup/AdvPlus, if you want. Some folks prefer to keep their rides small and private, so I will take no action without your blessing.
So my understanding is the start date is May 15/15 and is a 4 day trip. Is this pavement or a combination of pavement/ gravel? We would be camping. Where? Provincial park, private camp ground or Crown Land? I'm interested and am off those dates.
i ride a 650 KLR
Such a cool site - thanks for the bump. I will be putting some time into the planning of this ride shortly. At this point a fellow Stromtrooper, Michael Fritz, is the only confirmed rider coming along. As mentioned before, I plan on leaving Ottawa early enough to meet up with any other interested riders in Bowmanville at Camp 30 at 12:30 pm on Friday, May 15, 2015.
Michael will be leaving from Cornwall and meeting me at an EnRoute along the way.
Visser has also expressed interest - and I am hoping to get a couple more Stromtroopers along for the ride.
Yep, I am still in. I requested that Friday off of work and it has been approved. I am also on a Vstrom and on Stromtroopers, although you can't even call me a lurker there as I only visit occasionally to check out the used items for sale pages.
I'll be coming from Mississauga, so I guess I won't have to leave early.
How many nights are we looking at? Are we camping or splitting hotel rooms? And either way, have you figured out where we will stay?
Ok, sorry guys - kinda lapsed on the details here, lol. From what I can tell, this is going to be a 'mostly' asphalt with as much gravel as we can find ride. I know that we will be riding gravel roads to get to the abandoned prison in Burwash - and also to get to the old lumber mill near Harcourt - but other than that the route / conditions are up to us. As noted I plan on being out riding all 4 days - but no one is locked into that. If you can only get away for a day or two, let me know - we will definitely figure that out.
As for where we are staying - this is where it may get iffy for some of you. I am an 'off-the-bike-hammock-camper' - so for me it is more about picking the time to stop than it is the location. Anywhere with a couple of trees, posts or stanchions and I am happy. That being said, I am 48 years old and I will never say 'no' to splitting a room and sleeping in a bed, lol. So, yes - camping, crown land, motels - whatever suits the group best. (Did I mention I am partial to camping?)
I am not a steadfast 'we-have-to-go-now-to-make-it-to...' type of rider. I am out there for the adventure - and in this case, to see some of what Ontario has forgotten. So I will not be planning out an itinerary down to the 'this is where we have to be by 8:00pm' type of detail.
Now, most importantly - I welcome and want some feedback from you guys on other possible abandoned sites. I was thinking that after Burwash we could / should head towards Manitoulin Island. For those of you who have never been, you will love it. The scenery and riding are great. There is a ton of gravel if we want it. And there are more abandoned houses on the island than I have ever seen in any one spot before.
Oh, and yes Duncan - feel free to post away on other forums. All are welcome to join, and to drop put / head home whenever they so choose.
Ok - survey says?
Camping works for me, and I don't need any sort of itinerary and don't mind exploring as it goes.
The Saturday of that weekend is also the Mennonite Steel Bridges ODSC run -- but maybe I can just grab the gpx file for that one and ride it later on my own. I probably wouldn't tag along for the whole four days, especially since you'd be ending up in Ottawa, but I could see doing a couple days then heading towards home.
That sounds great visser. I completely understand that 4 days is not doable for everybody - so lets just make this about having a hoot while we are out there. I do a ton of solo riding - 14,000kms from Ottawa through the Rockies to Van and back - so I will not be put out if I find myself alone come Sunday. As mentioned in an earlier post - I am doing this ride regardless - having a few others come along just makes it more fun
So - anyone have any ideas / suggestions?
Out -- gf just informed me of a wedding announced that weekend. Was hoping I could sneak out for the Falls Tour, but no such luck.
I think this tour is a fantastic idea, and wouldn't mind repeating it in a few weeks. Are you okay to share your route(s)?
Sure thing Duncan. I can either post them here or on another site - am I allowed to post .gpx or .kmz / .kml files here?
There is a forum topic under "Tracks and Routes" here for posting your tracks for others to share.
I note that I messed up -- I was hoping to get to the Steel Bridges tour in the morning, but the gf says I'm on call all day. The Falls Tour is this weekend (see you there?).
If you are planning on coming to Manitoulin, let me know, I'm on the island and can hook up with you guys.
No, not this time Duncan. I will be riding some local gravel roads in Ottawa this weekend - but I am sure we will cross paths this season. Are you coming along on the Bancroft V Strom lunch ride April 18th?
I think Manitoulin is pretty much a for-sure Smitty, for me anyway. It's just too gorgeous an area to be that close (Burwash) and not go ride the island.
For anyone from the GTA who is thinking about / considering coming on this little adventure, I cannot over-state what an amazing ride it would be for you to return via Manitoulin Island - Tobermory - Bruce Peninsula - GTA. Truly beautiful riding.
I'm watching this thread, sounds like you'll have a good turnout. Not sure if I'll be able to join the ride yet but will know closer to the date.
I'm afraid I can't commit to the ride at this time but will keep reading the thread.
That sounds good SuperNam - it would be great to have anyone who wants to come along and it is certain to be an interesting ride with lots of photo op's
I am sure we will post pics after the ride - who knows - maybe this is the start of another annual...
I'd love to do this one but at this point looks like I'll be up in Huntsville with the wife at her mom's place for the weekend.
Irregardless I'll have my bike up there to ride the area, gonna do some more exploring along the west side of Algonquin.
