Hey guys I was just wondering if anybody knows if you can ride on the Bruce country rail trail that runs through Mildmay and up to South Hampton? I go up to South Hampton a couple of times a year (although rarely on the KLR) and have always wondered. I was on the Bruce Trail site and it permits ATV's but says nothing about bikes.
    Any info
    Stay Cool

Yes, they do permit bikes these days - you just need to buy a trail pass (or membership) and indicated dirt bike. Not all the maintenance people are aware of it, though. Got stopped on the weekend and had to let them know that we're allowed now :)

btw - watch out for random deep gravel "pools", there are two or three north of Paisley - you can get a tank slapper going in a hurry, and they come out of nowhere.

I think that is the trail that OFTR got us equal rights on as of May this year.

At this time, the Bruce County Rail Trail does not allow motorcycles on their trails. The OFTR has been in discussions with them this year, we are dealing with the Forest Manager to see if we can get some type of access agreement worked out to allow motorcycles to gain access to the Rail Trail. The first priority is to ensure motorcycles can use the forest, once that is dealt with we will determine how access will be granted (via OFTR pass, a separate Forest pass, existing pass from EOTA or some other organization already doing passes for motorized users of the Rail Trail, etc.).

Stay tuned, we'll update this as more information becomes available.

my pleasure. Hey John, just thinking out loud, do you have any idea how many people in that area would be riding if they had access to the trails? Are there enough to organize a local club (Bruce County Rail Trail Riders or something along those lines)? If we go to the Forest Manager with info on expected riders, and a willingness to not just ride but to help in stewarding our members, it goes a long way towards access.

Let me know if you have any insights to this, anyone else reading, if you're in that area or have ideas about the area, please pipe up. Dave G from the OFTR can use all the info we have on riders etc. in that area in his discussions.

    Thanks,

    Dave

Hi Dave, I wish I had info for you. Unfortunately I don't live in the Grey Bruce area, although I do visit multiple times a year and was hoping to make my drive up a little less boring.
Wish I could be more help

Hello Dave, just new to the forum here and the OFTR. I'm in the Owen Sound area and would be very happy to hear of developments for approved riding within our townships on existing trails, or the formation of other approved areas. I tried reaching out earlier in the year to the South Bruce Peninsula ATV Club, (http://www.sbpatvclub.ca/about_us.html), but they do not allow motorcycles on their 150km plus of offroad trails?? Not sure if the OFTR would be successful in coming to some kind of agreement for including bikes as authorized, permitted use. I know that they are accessing more and more of the snowmobile trails in the area, and it would be great for offroad motorcycle use as well. I've heard that they soon may even be able to ride from Wiarton to Markdale/Flesherton. Would you be able to follow up with this club and see if we could work together? Also, it would be great to see our townships adjust their bylaw to allow permitted motorcyle use, like they do with atvs. Here is a link to the bylaw in my own township which specifies dirt bikes are not included in the authorized vehicles - http://www.georgianbluffs.on.ca/sites/d ... 176145.pdf. It would be great if they would recognize plated, permitted dirtbike riders belonging to the OFTR. Can you help?

    Mark

You are right, some progress has been made by the OFTR. But no official announcement yet: we are waiting for all the requirements to be met and formalities finished. Please stay off the rail trail until the OFTR gives us clearance, we don't want to jeopardize our access to the trail.

    Thanks,

    Michel

The EOTA currently has a section of this on it's interactive map listed as "multi-use". It's in pink, which on the paper map says that motorcycles are allowed. (Orange is ATV only).

The southern most section is marked as "motorcycles prohibited" on the trail itself. There are no such markings on the northern (majority) of the trail.

Based on that info, I rode this rail trail a couple of weeks ago. Apparently, I shouldn't have. I am new to this whole dual sport thing, and have been finding it difficult to figure out where I can and can't ride. I'd be surprised if I was the only person who believed that section of the trail is accessible for motorcycles.

I have both an OFTR and EOTA membership. Fwiw: when I ran into the motorcycles prohibited signs, I turned around.

Thanks for the info. I rode a portion of the EOTA years ago, I remember buying a day pass to get the right to ride on it...At the time I got the info from a gas station attendant (otherwise it would have been hard to know.
