Is that what the CMA rule book says?

Well, modern bikes don't really need them as they stopped spitting out sparks after water cooling came along.

Europe seems to make out fine without them and they don't burn down their forests!

I agree that they are a good idea and not worth the risk. I'm just a little PO'd cause I bought a really nice Six Days Silencer (Doma) while in Germany for my KTM and only now just realized that is has no sparky. Looks like I'll have to buy an FMF after all! Good thing Sommer will let me return it and I only have to eat the shipping costs. It's such a drag cause the silencer is SOOO nice and they are very quiet!

Thats what I can't figure out when it comes to North America and sparky's.
Europe were all the ecos are and no sparky's required and here with space galour we need sparky's.
I have set the Ganny on fire (did put it out) cause a leaf or 2 landed on the header of a KLX300 and when I stopped for a moment a piece fell to the ground and started a small ground fire :x .
    Another reason I HATE 4T's

But a spark from the Exhaust tip doing the same...notta a chance IMO.
greater chance from a cig but or lightning or car fire or camp fire or.......exhaust header.

    noise

That would be fine if nobody ever changed pipes/ silencers, always changed their packing regularly, never drilled holes, cut off tips etc. etc.

A sticker is a great idea. Maybe the OFTR could get behind it?

If the OFTR could supply a dated heat restant sticker to the clubs that they could use would be great. It could be put on the pipe on the seem of the end cap and would be good for one year. Once you were sound tested at one ride you would be good for a year.

From my presonal perspective (not the OFTR official position)

It would be difficult since there is a maintenance aspect to the 'aproval'. I may test fine in the spring but if I dont re-pack my muffler the bike will be much louder in the fall.

Perhaps the sticker could be dated?

    noise issueand spark issue

ok point # 1 the CMA rule book doesn't (unless they have added a rule to that effect) (2007) have a rule stating the need for spark arrestors in enduro competition. however some organizers are requesting that you have one!! the same applies for trail riding events as for closed course events (mx, harescrambles) do not require a sparky.
point #2 on average mufflers reach there maximum dampning effect after 8-14 hrs after repacking then remain close to that for four to six months (one ride a week 8 hrs) if you ride during the week and compete on the weekends this means repacking your muffler every 2 months or more? so having a sticker indicating that your bike has passed sound should be done at the event you are riding in or be only valide for 2 month periods?

As far as the sparky is concerned, the MNR and County both ask us to check for spark arrestors when we use their land for the Beagle Bash.

Just curious what the db's for a stock 400exc are. Apparently they are much louder than the 450/525, and will not pass the CMA sound test.

How well does a turn down work in reducing db's?

Spark arrestors are a requirment for the Simcoe County Forest Recreation Policy.

Enforcement may not be in place or effective but it is a requirement.

I made up a custom turn down for mine. Haven't had a sound test done, but I doubt it really reduces total noise output. I believe it may reduce the spread of the sound a bit. Definitely better for the rider behind me; not blatting in his face.
On a ride last year, Stephen VK was about 20' ahead of me and Bruno was about 20' behind me. Stephen stopped his bike to wait as I made my way forward. Bruno was just getting through a trail obstacle. When I asked Stephen about the noise level of my bike, he said he could only hear Bruno's 400EXC. Bruno even had the Cycle Improvements muffler modification done. KTM should be hassled into building better exhaust systems. My bike typically blows 94db and that still seems loud to me.

Stephen, are you referring to the 2007s? The stock 400 was way loud in 2006.

He sure is'nt refering to the 07's!!! It will be interesting to see what they "blow" but it is quieter than the LC4 by ear.

I might need that DOT horn in the woods! Cause you sure aint gonna hear me sneak up on your tail! I already startled two hikers!

The 07 EXC is whisper quiet but the XC-W (old EXC) is still pretty loud. My 03 450EXC failed the sound test when it was brand new at the Mini-Pine a few years ago.

    Sorry, yes. The 2006.

There is no 2007 400 exc.
The 2007 450 and 525 exc are wisper quiet. But I doubt many will stay that way. Just take a look at KTM Talk, guys are already modifing the pipes.

From testing more then a few 400, 450 and 525 at the Cord and Terra Nova the 400 are the quitest of the 3. The 525 barely even pass just above idle, let alone the test speed.

The fact are, and I hate to say this is.
Most performance 4T will not honestly pass a proper sound test at 94 dB.
They might at 96 dB. 96 is the US limit and most bikes are made to meet this. If you want to meet 94 with a stock pipe, it just won't happen.
It is a sad fact, the manufaturers are just making 4T bikes way too loud.

Seen the db dawg before, great idea. Only problem is they won't fit the stock exc end cap.

What kind of db reduction can be expected with the Cycle Improvments modifications?

You could probably buy an endcap for a 2007 exc , used off of KTM Talk or new from a any dealer. As you probably know the 07 endcap quiets the bike down significantly over earlier model endcaps.
