Don, I think a KLR would do just fine up that way. I managed to get a Civic up there quite a way a few years back while hunting.

A friend of mine was up Portelance a few days ago and the river is currently flooding out the road just after the 3rd bridge. Definitely would work best to try later in the season when things dry up - my Tiger has some road-biased tires on it now that would not like mud.

I'll be bringing a Spot device as a backup.

Thanks for the information I am planning on riding this area next month ( mid June ) while visiting some friends in New Liskeard and Kapuskasing. My route I am planning is to take Grassy Road to Timmins, then Red Pine Road to Smooth Rock Falls up to Abitibi Canyon. On the way back from Kapuskasing take Nova Road down to Foleyet. The other parts of the trip will be slab which I am very familiar with. Looking for feedback on what to expect from the following roads.
    Grassy Road
    Red Pine Road
    Nova Road

Will be riding a Tiger with nobbies

    Hi Plonker,

Where does Grassy Lake Road run? I'm only familiar with one just West of Sudbury that is a dead end. Does it run parallel to hwy 144?

    Hey Jake

Grassy Road runs parallel to 144 on the East Side of it and the joins into Papakomeka Road which travels up to Timmins. However this is all based upon Backroad Mapbooks no real life experience, found the route through a thread.

Would like to know what type of adventure awaits so I can be somewhat prepared.

I've tried twice to ride to Timmins via Grassy Lake Rd, but each time the weather turned pretty foul. I instead ended up heading over to hwy 144 and then up to Gogama staying overnight at the Star Dust motel as violent thunder storms surrounded me. The next day I headed down 144 and took the KVR road back over to Portelance.

Both times I rode on the Labour Day weekend and both times the weather turned crappie.

If you get the chance the KVR logging road is a great ride!
