I am looking to pick up an inexpensive bike for putting around with my kids on a Pw50 and PW80 (eventually).

I have never ridden a 4T dirtbike... don't really want to... but it seems to fit the bill here. I need something that I can troll along as slow as needed, but without getting too frustrated.

Would a WR250 be able to do this? Or should I look at a TTR instead? I wouldn't mind having something that could also be "interesting" for me to ride when I am on my own. Currently I am riding a YZ250X, which is not ideal for this job.

Or maybe I should find an old TY trials? keep it smoking.

So why won't a YZ250X do this? The X is supposed to be woods friendly. It should be able to idle along with no issue. You could always remove your thermostat if it runs hot at low speed. Most of the water cooled four strokes will have overheating issues at slow speeds, although a cooling fan might help.

A docile bike will be easier to ride slowly, maybe an air cooled 4T would be good, but you might find them too cramped for an adult. An old TY or similar sounds good.

The YZX has the MX 1st and 2nd gears... The suspension is more woods friendly, the 18" wheel is more woods friendly, the slightly softer power is more woods friendly, but its an off-road race bike. It wants to go fast. I also have it jetted rather sharp, I guess.

The cable clutch stalls easier than my KTM 200 did, by a ways. I have a FWW to put on this winter, so maybe that will help.

That said, the more I think about it, the more the TY seems to fit.

PS - I NEED to buy another bike, so that I can ride with the kids....

I would go for an air-cooled, low strung 4T over a WR. An inexpensive WR will be old and rebuilding one after it bows up wont be inexpensive. Maybe consider a smaller one that the kids can grow into? They are a blast to ride if all you are doing is chasing kids, but they wouldn't be good for riding on your own (but you have the YZX for that).

The trials bike idea also sounds like fun.

PS. You will like the FWW on the YZ, but you are correct that it will never be ideal for following PW50's around.

I am in a similar boat. My daughter is hopefully going to be learning to ride this summer too. I feel like I " NEED" another bike too. Unfortunately my wallet says different !!!
I was thinking that an old trials bike would be a fun way to go. Might even lead into some vintage trials riding ? Good luck on the hunt. Let us know what you end up with .

Or a gently used ttr125 for you now - and they will eventually grow into at 10/11 years old, if just trail riding.

My son went from a pw50,pw80, ttr 125small wheel- to a ttr125le last year (11 years old now), which prior to him Rodong it , i rode, and friends and family rode if going trail riding (I’d take the 500 exc if that was the case for three of us) while he was on the pw80.

Pending riding location and speed - a used trials may not keep up too well IMO. If just riding single track, may work out just fine.
