Myself and another rider are planning a trip to ride up and around the area near the Ishpatina Ridge, North East of Sudbury, this coming August 4th, 5th, and 6th…. That is the Friday, Saturday, and Sunday of the Civic long weekend (planned like that to avoid the holiday cottage traffic).

The idea is to rough camp (no services) somewhere off of Portelance Road, or other side trails in that area, or possibly at the area near the Sturgeon River on the way to Ishpatina Ridge (if my truck can get back there).

I’ll be going up in the truck, the other rider is going to meet me there. If anyone else wants to come along, I am offering to carry needed gear (tent, sleeping bag, etc) as long as it is all fully contained in a large duffle bag or something and can be tied down in the back of my truck alongside my bike.

The ride: I will be on a DRZ with knobbies. The other rider is on a KLR with 50/50 tires, so we are mostly going to explore the logging roads of the area, may ride a bit of the TCAT from Capreol, and generally just see what we can find in the area. I have a Clarke tank with a 300km+ range, and of course the KLR has decent range – which is needed up there as the gas stations are fairly spread out.

Please post in this thread or PM me if you are interested in joining us for this two night \ three day adventure

Change of plans... since Friday is going to be wet, we will wait to Sunday and just go up to Bonnechere area to do some rough camping and riding the back roads.

Let me know if anyone is interested.

    Hi Visser,

Let me know if you plan on trying this trip again at some point. I'm pretty familiar with the area up to the Sturgeon River turnoff, but have never ventured past that point to Ishpatina itself and would like to check it out. Cheers.

    Hey Jake,

I do plan on heading that way again, just not sure when. I definitely want to wait until the black flies die down a bit.

I ended up riding some of those roads last summer with a buddy and found a number of good spots to camp for free so I plan on trailering the bike up and spending a couple nights as long as the forest fire problem of last summer doesn't return. Here is the write-up for that trip: https://www.out4arip.com/2018/08/north-of-capreol.html

We didn't end up doing much real offroading... just one fairly long atv trail on a hydro cut, the rest was all logging roads. Good times though, although a bit remote when things happen.

Good write-up. Of course the chain falls off once you're back in the woods!

Definitely worth waiting until later in the season to venture back there again, a chunk of the road is flooded out right now anyway. I'd like to keep going North up Portelance at some point as well. Not extreme off-roading, but enough rough sections, possible washouts, etc for nearly 170km until you pop out near the Watershed on Hwy 144. I'll be doing some scouting in the next few weeks to see how things are drying up.

Is the bug situation getting any better up there yet Jake?

I see that the forest fires have started again, so no doubt there are fire bans everywhere up there -- makes it tough to want to go camping up there if can't even have a camp fire.

I am planning on hauling my bike up there at some point this summer, but haven't narrowed down when. Probably later on when the black flies/deer flies/mosquitoes have died down a bit.

I'm in Mississauga, but will head up with a truck and a trailer with the bike on it. There are a bunch of free camping spots on Portelance Road or just off it so I will pick one and stay a couple nights while exploring the area. I did explore this area a bit last summer too, but didn't get to see as much as I had hoped due to a breakdown. We also didn't cross the river to get closer to Ishpatina Ridge as it was too deep at the time -- I was somewhat considering bringing my ATV up instead of the bike because I can cross much deeper water and mud with the ATV.

Either way, whatever I ride, I will post when I am heading up that way and if you or anyone else wanted to meet up there that could work. Even if I bring the ATV, I don't mind riding with bikes... at least we'd have a winch available to pull any bikes out of the mudholes if they are too deep.

    Hi Visser,

When I was out there about 2 weeks ago the mosquitoes were fairly bad. But at least there is no fire ban in the Sudbury district right now.
Water levels have started to go down quite a bit as well.

    Saaru,
I’m still looking to do this trip this summer and am always exploring around Sudbury in general should you end up this way. Definitely no shortage of roads and trails
