Hey Ash. The group I ride with ended up there a couple of years ago. It wasn't planned we just new they had trails.
Well, it is ORV heaven. You buy a trail pass that allows you to ride down the side of any type of road, highway, whatever.
We stayed at the southern side of Houghton lake. Rustic Cabins at real good prices for a group. It was a ten to twenty minute ride to the trails. And there are miles and miles of trails.
The only downside we found is that they have sand, very very deep sand. The deepest I have ever rode. Some of the group really struggled with the amount we found on the trails. Albeit some trails were not so deep and there were many back roads to keep us happy. We rode dirt most of the way around the lake until a broken leg changed our plans.
Check it out. I think a big ORV area was on the East side of the lake

Whole state is made outta sand, lol, lots of trails. Tons of stuff to see in the UP, check out Cannonshots UPAT(UP adventure trail) for a long sandy tour, did most of it a few years ago.

Need to buy and display the ORV pass.

Sounds like we're looking at some sand although I read an article a few years ago in a magazine about some really good forest riding so I'm on the hunt to figure out where that was. Thanks for the input we'll make sure we have knobbies on for the trip. I also hope your buddy with the broken leg healed up OK.

Hey Todd thanks for the response. I think we're going to stay more south close to St Helens area rather than exlpore the UP but if this trip goes well the UP is definitely something I'm interested in - your photos have confirmed that for me it looks awesome!
