EDIT and UPDATE...Rain ends at 10:00...let's keep going

The routing is attached. Here's the gist of what we're doing...
    • 8 to 9 mills are going to be "visited" (some don't exist anymore)
    • We'll pass by two cemeteries of the Plewes family, one down south and one up north.
    • We'll pass by the highest point in Southern Ontario ('cause that's where the water's from)
    • There's an option to visit their homestead.
    • Lunch is in Creemore...on your own arrangements. See other recent threads for suggestions.
    • We don't return to the starting point, so that everyone can head off to home on their own recognizance.
    • I plan to have a story at each stop/mill.
It's a tour of the mills built by a family called Plewe's. They built water-powered mills from Thorold to Milton to Collingwood. We'll want to make it a little more interesting with some stories for each.

It runs our oft-frequented routes up to Creemore and Kimberley. So, you know there's good riding.

Let's meet at the Mohawk Inn, Campbellville (401 and the Guelph Line, exit 312) at 9:30 on Saturday morning, August 17. Driver's meeting yada, yada and wheels turning at 9:45.

I've got a route scoped out. It needs to be ridden. It's 231 km from Guelph to Terra Cotta to Collingwood to Flesherton. There are 13 significant waypoints!!

I'll get the first part checked out early in the season (like hopefully in March, please?). And then the run up to Collingwood/Beaver Valley might wait a bit til the big melt.

I'm going to send you some waypoints, via PM or email. Maybe you can verify that the there, there, is actually there?

So, Saturday looks promising. I've got two guys working on some of the background research to make this an "info ride". I plan on heading out from Guelph area around 10:00 and going as far north towards Collingwood/Flesherton as I can get. There needs to be some photo stops to capture some of the waypoints in more detail, so I'm not sure how long it will take.

Pop onto this thread if you're interested. I think I would head out from the Tims at Victoria and Hwy 7 in Guelph at 10:00. I'll be in the Acton area about 10:45. There's another Tims on the east side of town near a Shell station. I'll pause there to collect anyone else who's in.

I made it about half-way up through the list of waypoints on this Mills Tour. There was a lot of snow out there, as you'll see in the last photo.

It's pretty interesting to blend an historical perspective with riding because you see how much the land and water meant to the first settlers, in this case the clan Plewes.

    More exploring needed...

Did the final pre-ride on Saturday. Tour is looking good. This is NOT your average ODSC ride. It's chock-full of historical perspectives. There are a whole bunch of stops of interest on the way from the Mohawk (new starting point) to Creemore to the Beaver Valley. I'm expecting to ride this in August. Date tbd.

    Mills Tour 2019
    Inaugural Event
(we've never done a ride like this!)

    Saturday, August 17.

The ride stops at a series of significant historical locations, there will be a chance to learn about the early mill builders (the Plewes family), and gain a greater appreciation for that area that we usually just dust on through.

Suitable for any all bikes, from Big Dogs to road-ready enduros, if you can sit that long.

Lunch in Creemore...Start at the Mohawk...Various end points, according to your preferences.

    More organizing details to follow.

So, join up. It's real inexpensive and great value. If you come on the day of the ride it will cost you a membership anyway.

ADMIN EDIT: Hikerman has already contacted me about membership.

So, let that be a lesson. If any of your riding buds are on the fence about trying ODSC or otherwise wondering about what kind of fun we get up to. Get them out to the Mills Tour. At the very least, they'll see how amazing the ODSC Directors are at organizing rides.

    Hey Bruce,
The ride sounds great with all the historical stops.
You said any and all bikes. What are the roads like, do you need a DS or can you do it on a street bike?
    Thanks

    Al;
We certainly do our share of pavement...but there are some gravelly bits that, if taken cautiously, you could do on an Electra Glide. I think what may happen is that you'll have to try just that little bit harder to keep up as the dirt-ish bikes will outpace you on the gravel. I see an SM in your profile picture...you'll be okay on that.

If you went where I saw your video from the Creemore ride, on your SM, then you'll be just fine!
