Ken Hoeverman gave an update of the Northumberland issue at the AGM last Saturday. There is a short story today in Cobourg's daily newspaper. The story is not completly factual but close enough.
We have an ad running in two local newspapers next week for three days. The gist of the ad is to create some awareness of the situation and entice people to come out to the open House on March 26, 2:00pm thru 8:00pm. This date is aThursday, a poor time for working stiffs but maybe that was part of a plan. Following is a link to the newspaper article and the ad as it will appear.

    ATTENTION
    OFF ROAD MOTORCYCLISTS
    (Trail Riders)

Northumberland County Staff are recommending that Off Road Motorcycles (ORMs) not be allowed to use
the trails in Northumberland Forest due to Ecological, Environmental and Noise concerns.
This is not necessarily the view of the Northumberland Forest Advisory Committee (NFAC) whose
recommendations are not forwarded to your council.
NFAC is a committee with no power to vote or make recommendations.
    BACKGROUND
The Northumberland Trail Riders and the Ontario Federation of Trail Riders have been involved in this forest since the early 1990s and created multi-use single track trails with permission from the county. The county intends on gifting these trails to other user groups exclusively while they have made no investment in them.
The Oak Ridges Moraine Conservation Plan allows use of existing trails prior to November 2001 and the county is claiming otherwise. We have provided research that indicates that our choice of recreation poses no threat to ecology or the environment and the county has provided nothing to prove our use harms the environment. All uses have impact and ours is not problematic according to two studies of the Ganaraska Forest. The county cannot prove their claim. It is assumed that ORMs are causing concern, but there is no data to support that claim.
•The county assumes we do not wish to preserve and protect the forest. This is untrue.
•The county claimed that other forest managers complained about ORMs. This is untrue.
•The county did not consult with Alnwick/Haldimand prior to making recommendations.
•The county produced a Facilitators Atlas as a neutral working document to recommend uses and listed
experts who denied participation and were not consulted
    YOU NEED TO GET INVOLVED
If you are an off road motorcycle trail rider, it is time to get involved with the Northumberland Trail Riders (NTR) and the Ontario Federation of Trail Riders (OFTR) or lose your right to ride. Be advised that racing-motorcycles with loud exhausts and irresponsible riding are what has caused these actions and they will not be tolerated by anyone, especially the NTR/OFTR. We have proposed a stewardship agreement based on successful models in other forests in Ontario and they will not give us (you) a chance.
Here is what you can do:
•Attend the Open House on March 26, 2009, at the Baltimore Recreation Center, 2:00pm to 8:00pm (23 Community Center Road), Baltimore and sign the attendance sheet.
•Contact your local Councilor and County Staff via telephone, email or letter
    •Join the OFTR/NTR
For more information you can contact Warren Thaxter at 905-352-3336 or visit http://www.oftr.ca

Since I'm self employed & this meeting is longer (6 hour open house) I plan to go as well (90% chance I will go)..
The last meeting was about 2 hours.. It takes me about 2 hours each way coming from Guelph.. Didn't want to
drive 4 hours total for a 2 hour meeting.. But driving 4 hours for a 6 hour meeting and helping KenH out where
needed (probably doing coffee runs to Timmies) is okay.. See you there Joey..

wow, there sure is no bones about that news piece. Very clearly states the issues and the unfairness going on.

Once the trail riders are present...what are they expected to do? Is there an open mike/forum...or is it to just have a presence and show support?

SteveP, I think we will have a simple questionare and there will be a sign in book for everyone. Each of the user groups may have a booth set up, but I don't know if they will or not. We will have an NTR / OFTR information table. I don't believe there will be any meeting per say but there will be lots of oppertunity to look responsible and show unity.

Am I the only one that is living in the 8-[ twilight zone? 8-[

On a better note..... Went for the first ride of the season!!!! All Asphalt and all 2 km around the block.

A bit of an update on the Northumberland issue. Lots of people are expected at the County Open House on Thursday evening. There will be an OFTR table with lots of literature including books on building and maintaining trail, forest studies from Ganaraska, and land use agreements and business plans from other forests and riding areas. There will also be a couple of videos on the same subject.
The county will have the latest proposal on display and supposedly staff will answer questions. I don't know what other groups will display.
The County ad on the website say they will take comments. Maybe people could prepare written comments ahead of time and include a second copy, one for the County Staff and one for our OFTR records. It might be nice to know if all comments are acknowledged.

An article and a letter to editor are in todays: www.Northumberlandtoday.com

The County Staff have done an update on the website but have not included the minutes from the February 26 workshop. I am really interested in how those minutes are presented!

Two additional items, I will not personally be at the open house because I will be at the NOHVCC conference in Houston, as will Ken Hoeverman.

Secondly, Orange Motorsports, about three blocks from the Baltimore Community Centre, will stay open late on Thursday and will have fresh coffee on hand if anyone has a notion to kick tires before of after attending the Open House

Not sure what you are trying to say Z1 Krob ???

You got to love this quote from Northumberland today:

Most groups have been amenable to compromises except all-terrain vehicle and dirt bike riders, a use which has a high impact on areas of the sandy forest floor, county councillors were told by Pyatt and Cobourg Mayor Peter Delanty, who chairs the committee charged with overseeing creation of a Forest Master Plan which includes aspects such as harvesting wood and replanting.

...yeah, I hear the harvesting wood is real great for the "sandy forest floor". This people are very two faced. the alltime best is the "greenie" that said they should provide birth control to the animals to control their population. Another very enviro friendly statement. Too many animals...lets chemically reduce their population...too many dirtbikers...let's ban them.

I figured it was quite obvious. Trying to rally everyone together at the open house then not even show up yourself.

All the more reason for them to show up dontcha think?

Actually they are working for you at a conference that was booked a long time ago and talked about at the AGM. < You were there right ? > . I helped out Ken & warren in the OFTR trailer on the weekend. They have been working a lot of hours for all of us. They did ask for some help on the weekend and only a few stepped up. Same people step up and help all the time, most just Bit$h.

I would suggest you call Ken and ask him about it. PM me and i will give you his #.

    Rant over.

Yes they did rally us together for this open house.. And I'm sure they would have (should have) been there.. But
Ken & Warren are attending the the National Off Highway Vehicle Conservation Council Conference in Houston..

I am sure others inc RickC (OFTR President) and others from the OFTR staff will be on hand to show our voice..
I will be there as well to show my support.. Cheers.. :p
