Time to start thinking about some rides for the '04 season :D

The type of rides I like are probably 50% backroads - mainly gravel and dirt, but could be paved - and 50% Forest Access and Powerline trails. We do come across some single track but try to avoid it as I'm riding a KLR650 with Dual Sport tires (Kenda K270). I don't want to ride terrain that needs knobbies, as it's then too unpleasant on the paved parts. BUT, some of the riders on previous rides used knobby tires - that's your choice. Most standard dualsport bikes would be OK for these rides - from XT/DR350's to 1150GS's.

Can we get some input here as to what would be a good format for these rides? I should stress that this is different to a day ride where we meet, ride all day, and head home at night. These rides would typically be 3-4 days, usually over a weekend, and could either be a tour with different overnight destinations, or set up a base at one location and tour daily from there. Previous multi-day ODSC rides have involved packing tents, etc and camping, staying at someones cottage, or riding from my RV parked at a campground. This year, I'd prefer to stay in motels (or someones cottage!) but that wouldn't prevent others from camping on the same trip.

Let's hear who is interested and available to do these mini-trips and some suggestions on destintions and preferred accomodations.

My choice: I'd like to ride in Eastern Ontario - centred on Bancroft - but anywhere that's reachable from the GTA on a 3-4 day ride is OK. Leaving on Friday morning (or late afternoon if time off is a problem) and returning on Sunday night would work for me.

    multi-day rides

I live in Pembroke and also have a KLR 650. I would love to hook up for similar types of rides. 2,3+ days. There are some logging road and snowmobile trails aroudn here I'd like to explore. Maybe some hydroline type stuff too? I have done the K&P near Calabogie but no other rides in that area and there are supposed to be a lot.

I am up for 2-3+ day rides with a mix of road, backroads and trails (nothing too technical, the KLR is HEAVY). I am a hihg school teacher so I am free all July and August pretty much. I am looking for folks to ride with in the Ottawa Valley area.

I would be interested in doing some exploring around Eastern Ontario, perhaps we can get together on your return and plan some routes.

On Sunday I drove up to Sierra Designs Outlet Store in Foymount, Ont. and saw hundreds of roads off of the main highways. Once back home I pulled out the MapArt Road Atlas and the Backroad Mapbook to study the area.

I have attached the scanned in images from the MapArt book and highlighted a number of roads. Has anyone ever explored these areas in detail. I'm thinking that once the frost is out of the ground it might be a good area to spend a couple of weekends exploring.

    John,

The areas you are looking at are as good as it gets!! Bob has done them all; most of them in both directions. Brian's annual Hastings Ride is based right in the centre of your upper map. I grew up riding from a summer cottage in Cashel Twp.
It is dual sporting heaven. And in between the backroads and forest access roads your refer to, are tons and tons of smaller trails.

    Enjoy,

    Al

    John,

I grew up in Bancroft and have riden or driven most of the roads in that area, as the others have said it is prime dual sport riding. I have gotten back in tothe sport last year and only got up there for two rides but did manage to get quite a bit of Double track on gps. I plan to head back up there and explore as much as I can this summer and gps as much as I can also. The gravel roads in the area which are almost all of the roads that arn't numbered are a blast to ride. There is the rail trails that run all over the area. Best thing I can suggest is to get a gps, and a couple of snowmobile maps and go and explore.

    Good luck and have fun

    Upcoming Rides

Looks like there's several rides already planned that overlap with this topic.

Check out "Upcoming Rides" Forum for:
    1) Al Buck's May 29th Irondale DS Ride - I'll be going up there with Al on Wednesday 26th and riding until Sunday.
    2) Wes' Hastings County exploration on June 11-13 - I'll be there, riding up from Cambridge.
    3) Same as 2) but from June 25-27.

These rides may be slightly more offroad than my usual backroads rides, but that's no big deal.

    '05 rides already started

The '05 season is now underway and I've had a few good "big dog" rides - a week in Florida in February with Barry on his KLR, a week in May on the Blue Ridge Parkway with 2 V-Stroms and a KLR. For both of these rides I was on my V-Strom but the next major one will be a KLR ride. I'll be spending a week with Peedee (both on KLRs) in the Bancroft area for the first week or so in July. We'll probably do our own version of Paris-Dacre on Friday July 1st to get there, spend the weekend riding in the Bancroft area, then do a mid-week ride (3 day?) around Algonquin Park, and perhaps a bit of Quebec, before heading back to Bancroft for the next weekend.

More details to follow in new post, but if anyone is interested in joining us, e-mail me with details of your bike, ability, riding preferences, and dates available.

I ride a 02 KLR 650 and would love to hook up with anyone or all who are heading North for some dual sport adventure!! Or just locally for some riding.

I live in Oakville and have a pretty flexible schedule.

4 day ride in September 05

I'm hoping to get a small group together for a 4 day ride sometime in September. The overall route would include a ride through Muskoka, across the north end of Algonquin Park (west to east), then over into Quebec and then return to Burlington via the Bancroft/Haliburton area. Would prefer to travel mid-week to avoid hassles with getting motels at short notice, but I'm flexible on this.

I'd prefer to take the KLR so we don't need to turn back if it gets rough (I haven't been north of Algonquin) but I could take the V-Strom if it's more suited to other riders needs.

Anyone got as week off in September and like to explore this part of Ontario (and just over the border into the Gatineau Hills)?

    '06 Rides

It's now March '06 and the riding season starts for real in a few weeks. Time to start planning some of the long Adventure-type rides.

I've been working on a route for a while that follows all the twisty roads between Niagara Falls and Tobermory on the Bruce Peninsular - it's about 800 Km of backroads, paved and gravel, plus road allowances. It'll be a full day to get there, after an overnight stay, and then take the Ferry to Manitoulin Island, explore a bit and then head over to Commanda and back down the Nipissing Trail. In total it's about 1600Km's - a mini-IronButt :D

Another trip I want to do is 3-4 days and goes up the forest access roads on the west of Algonquin Park and then over to Quebec, coming back through Calabogie, and Bancroft.

Going further afield than Ontario, we'll also be doing a 1-2 week trip to the Cabot Trail, via Vermont, NH and Maine, and possibly taking in the Cape Breton TT.

A late May/early June trip to Deals Gap and the Blue Ridge Parkway will become an annual event after the great ride we had in '05.

Would also like to get some day/weekend rides in Pennsylvania - it's actully closer than Bancroft for me.

Anyone else got any '06 plans they'd like to share?

Which Algonquin 'forest access road' are you talking about ? If it's Trout Creek to Kiosk through the park, that one shows up on Garmin Mapsource, but other maps like the backroad guides say it's a dogsled trail, only useable in winter.

That's one of the reasons I've decided to get into dual sport up here. There are tons of roads that need exploring...

Last year, after the Parry Sound Sportbike Festival, I headed up to Commanda and then over to Trout Creek. The road east out of Trout Creek is actually called Forest Access Rd and it eventually heads south just before the Park boundary - think it's called Deadhorse Rd - and works it's way down to Kearney. I'll be trying to find similar roads to that on my next trip - it'll be more exploring than pre-planned.

Perhaps you could join us for the part near you and you could show us the local good stuff :D
