Last summer during my ride around Algonquin Park I hooked onto a rail trail from Barry's Bay and rode for about 40kms west before dropping out around upper Madawaska. I believe the rail trail starts in Whitney and generally follows along Hwy 60 east.

Does anyone know how far east you can actually ride this trail?

    Thanks

Well looks like no one has the answer here, so I did a little research today and called an ATV shop in Whitney. The fellow there was great with lots of info and told me that rail trail will take you all the way to Ottawa. So than I used Google Earth, zoomed in and followed the trail along to make sure, but seems like in the town of Renfrew, the track cuts across farm fields (you can no longer see the rail trail in those sections of fields). I'm pretty sure one can't be riding through there, so I guess I'll have to do some more calls to the Renfrew folks to find out what the situation is.

    I guess I'm a "Trail Detective", ha! :D

Hey I don't know much about the trails up there, I wish I could be more help sorry. I do know that I have been known to use off-road truck sites to find trail info.

This is one that I have read before it was a pretty good read. I think that he may have used part of the trail you are talking about. Might help you out.
Good luck. I look forward to finding out where it goes!

We camped north of Combermere last year (July long weekend) and I took the bike up north of Barry's Bay across an unmaintained road which looped around and back down to the rail line. I got stopped by a downed tree I couldn't get around so, had to turn back. A couple of year's ago I went across the rail trail from Whitney but went exploring on one of the access trails to Algonquin instead of going across to Barry's Bay. I have also snowmobiled on a rail trail from Pembroke west for some ways as well.

We will be going up there again this year and I will be exploring up in the Barry's Bay if you're interested in connecting up and running the line.

That sounds like it could be a plan.

My inlaws live in Huntsville and I tend to ride up there on the long weekends, going just about anywhere from there. It would probably be about 1-1/2 hrs from Huntsville to Whitney along Hwy 60 and than hook on the rail trail from Whitney and start riding east as far as we can go(although got to stop at the Wilno Pub & Tavern, the food is fantastic!).

Could meet up somewhere in Barry'a Bay or where ever. Send me a pm when you and your family are heading up there.

If you are leaving out of Huntsville, does the park to park trail not run along 60 for a bit? come to think of it how far does it run?
I guess I should have looked at that first. It may actually be the trail that you are talking about.

I've ridden the park-to-park many times. It runs from Kearney to Parry Sound.

On the east side of Algonquin starting in Whitney is also a rail trail which I rode last summer from Barry's Bay to Whitney. Its an awesome ride, but I'd like to do it again from Whitney and see how far east you can ride.

This is why I'm trying to find out how far east the trail takes you.

Hey Hardy. If you put something together for this, I'd be in for sure. I've been gearing up for the Roaming Rally this year so am planning to do some weekend trips here and there and maybe throw in a vacation day here and there for some extended weekends. This sounds like it would be a great trip. Never thought I'd like the old railway bed stuff but after a relatively short stretch of it with Dualsport, I want more. The scenery is awesome.

Not sure if you'd be camping, cottaging or motelling but I'd be game for whatever. I've been slowly collecting camping gear so that's gonna be my focus but, like I say, I'll go with the flow.

Hey Laird, definitely keep you in mind if and when that time comes. I not into the camping stuff anymore and usually look for a motel at the end of the day.

    Cheers :)

Any interest in arranging to do this on the July 1st, Long Weekend? We went up there last year (north of Combermere). I was just on Google Earth looking at some of the trails in that area, looks pretty interesting.

I don't see why not, long weekends work best for me.

Will see as the date draws a little closer (have to see what the rest of the family is doing).

July 1st is the Monday. I'd be inclined to maybe arrange a day off for the Friday and\or the Tuesday. :D

I'd probably take off late Friday afternoon and head up to Huntsville via my normal backroads route including the "Old Wagon Trail" and stay for the night in Huntsville.

Take off early Saturday morning and head through Algonquin Park on hwy #60 to Whitney, from there I will hook on to the rail trail and head over to Barry's Bay.

Laird if you want you can head up with me to Huntsville on the Friday where we can book a motel room for the night. I tend to stay at a motel on the west side of town right across from the train station (can't remember the name right now) and its $69.00 for the night. Its clean and newly renovated.
