Some time back a user asked why he couldn't search for "KTM". The answer is that php and it's related data tables do not handle any words less than 4 characters in length. There are some software solutions for this like Elastic Search, but they require significant server resources which is not practical for us since we are hosted on a shared server.

Recently Bob M. asked about searching for short words like GPS so I had another look at the problem. I found an addon that offers some extra search ability. I have modified a bunch of templates to make it work and it should have some benefit.

    1) Click inside the "Search" box (upper right of forum) to open the dropdown
    2) Click on the "More" button
    3) Click on the "Exact Text Search" tab
    4) Enter text / choose method and submit
    5) Info is displayed in a table format
    6) Click on the number to go to the post

Thanks, Neil - it's seems to work well if the search string ".gpx" is in the Title or the message but it ignores attachments with a .gpx extension.

My interest was to find attachments, but it's definitely useful to be able to search for short words.

I tried using Google to search for "gpx site:www.odsc.on.ca" (which was the phpbb workaround for short words) but it still doesn't find attachments.

I checked with the XF support forum and the software developer has confirmed there is no method for users to search attachments. Currently there are no plans to develop this is the future.

Even the ADMIN attachment browser (that is used to manage attachments) is only a list of all attachments and does not have any text search capability.
