The St-Thomas Rail Trail ride will happen again this year: Saturday Oct 13th 2018.

The ride will start from London at the Superstore mall on Wellington road, just south of the 401.

Planning to start at 10:00 am. Please have your bike fuelled and ready to go.

The ride is suitable for all blue plated (street legal) bike on knobbies.

This is one of the longest trails in SW Ontario. It is an abandoned rail bed that cuts through the countryside, some small towns, etc. The trail is quite muddy, has a number of water holes and muddy ruts, it is overgrown in sections. It’s definitely fun to ride! There are a few gas stations along the way. Lunch will be in Ridgetown.

This ride is free to members and $10 for non members.

Michael, are you doing it with the KLR?

I don't know yet: the Beta hasn't seen much action lately, so I'm leaning towards it. But this ride can be done on big bikes too...

    Michel,

Ride the Beta, I rode Husky last couple of years and the lighter bike will be appreciated. I have ridden it on DR 650 also. It depends on how much rain happens in the days before.

Note: gas station in Ridgetown has not reopened yet. You can get gas in West Lorne or when you cross Victoria Road going into Ridgetown ride out toward 401. There is an Esso there.

Watch out near Iona between Moore Road and Houghton road as a municipal drain culvert was removed. it’s deep and not well marked. Orange pilon was there but ?? Who knows now.

Thanks for the tips Cole. I heard about your recent injury: take care and look after it so you can ride again next spring!

I'm planning on it. I will ride one-way (west). I have to visit a relative in Leamington, so will truck to start point and then from finish. (Wife is chauffeuring). Please let it be pleasant weather!

Without full knobbies the KLR might be a handful. I had to bail midway last year after I got tired of picking up the big Kwak out of the mud. That said I did make it through the municipal drain much to my surprise (and likely others too)

The trail is about 80km each way. I plan on riding it both ways...There are roads that cut across the trail all along, so it’s easy to bailout onto roads to get back to London.

Just to confirm, is there truck/trailer parking available at the start location?

Yes there is: It's a large commercial centre, so lots of parking.

I will meet up at the trail head, has it changed this year with the issues on Blind Line?

Gonna see how the week goes, but would like to make it, was supposed to be heading to WV but am having truck issues. If I do, I will meet out by Lyle rd and Blind line.

    Cheers, Todd

    Michel,

My son Brett is going to ride it on my Husky and will meet at the trail head at Lyle rd and Blind Line at 10:30. It takes about 1/2 hr to get there from the Superstore parking lot.

What are “the Issues” on Blind Line?

Anyone bringing big bikes on this ride? GS with knobbies, or should I ride the 350 (if I can make it)?
Don't want to be the only slow one holding everyone up.

Either bike could do this ride IMHO. But the 350 might be a better choice. I will personally ride the trail bike for this one.

The weather forecast is looking good: cool & dry. There hasn't been much rain in the past week; so conditions will be good for this late season ride!

I will post the GPS track later today.

Here is the GPS file for the ride. It is an old track log from a previous year. Not a "route" per se but we can just follow the bread crumb to Ridgetown.

Weather still looks cool but dry, should be fun!

    Michel;

Can you clarify the start point location in London? We've recently started from the McDonald's south of the 401, but this track-set suggests some location on Greenfield Drive...
