After much deliberation and juggling ride organiser availability, the St-Thomas Rail Trail Ride will go ahead on Saturday October 14th. Our man in St-Thomas, Cole McBain has volunteered to lead the ride.

The ride is open to members and non-members. Members can ride for free, non-members will be charged $10.

Cole will post the details soon...

I have talked to Brian Helliwell about this ride. We decided to run this ride as per the original date of Saturday October 14th for those who planned on that date.

The ride will also be run again on Sunday October 29th.

Ride whichever date you can...or ride them both!!

Details on starting time and location will follow but will be similar in format to last year's ride.

    Brian’s Description::

“This is a great end of the season ride on a trail very few people know about. It's a trail I call the longest in South Western Ontario.
The trail starts just west of St Thomas and I've ridden it as far as Blenhiem which makes it 80 km of trail 1 way. It is or was rail trail, but now it's fairly grown-in in spots so it's a little tighter and little slower. You'll probably spend more time in second and third gear than fourth and fifth. It passes through a few small towns along the way. It's quite interesting and scenic.”

The ride will be led by Cole Mc Bain.

    Date: Saturday October 14, 2017

    Start Time: 1030 am

Start Location: At trail head at intersection of Lyle Sideroad and Blind Line.

    42°46'46.5"N 81°15'31.6"W

    42.779571, -81.258787

Alternate Start Location: London On, specifically the Superstore Mall parking lot on Wellington Road immediately south of the 401 leaving no later than 10:00 am.

Suggested route to trail head will take 31 minutes. I will not be at alternate start as I am coming from south of St Thomas.

The ride is about 190 km round trip with a lunch/fuel break halfway into the ride in Ridgetown.

Gas is available along the trail at Dutton, West Lorne and Rodney, so if you have a small tank you can fill up along the way.

This ride is suitable for all sizes of bikes, including Big Dogs, with a street plate. The trail does get muddy, so knobby tires are strongly suggested. Please arrive at the start point fuelled up & ready to go. There is a gas station across the 401 from the "London" Starting Point.

This event is free for ODSC members. Non members are welcome to attend with a $10 donation to the club.

Cole will be the contact to provide further details.

There's room for a few trucks and trailers. If you follow google link, you can zoom in and see the area. Last year there were a few riders who parked there (along with a combine that was sitting there).

Anyone leaving from the Alternate start? It's just a bit out of my way but I'd go that route just to meet up and ride with others.

Good Greasy Spoon nearby??(not Tim's and McD)

Thanks to everybody who helped upright my KLR on multiple occasions. Hope the rest of the trail was good. I think falling into the large puddle and getting pretty much, completely soaked finally broke my spirit and it was quickly down hill from there.

Not sure if that bike is just a tad too big or whether I just plain suck at riding it.

There was a lot more water than usual. Once we got past West Lorne, the trail was much better. Eight riders to start was good.

You made it through the municipal drain where the culvert had been removed, so I think your riding was good, but the multiple water holes can be tiring.

It was a nice ride back (much drier) .We bailed out to gravel roads after West Lorne coming back as it was getting late and the water holes wouldn't have been fun then.

Note to Brian...watch out for big ditch after Iona Road where culvert has been removed.

No gas in Ridgetown. You can get it at 21 and 401, b

It was a great ride!! Jim and I got sideways a few times pushing a bit harder on the return leg in those rutted sections but we managed to keep them upright ;)
Glad it was yesterday and not today based on the weather.

Yeah a set of Trackmasters might of worked a lot better in the mud. I think my front was just loading right up with goo.

Good ride, nice to meet everyone. Tom and I pushed hard on the way back. I was worried about the culvert ditch, seemed taller on the East side, but wasn't an issue to get up. It would be good to see some of those videos.

    Thanks,

    Jim

Ditch is between Moore road and Houghton road. There are orange pilons there, but beware to anyone riding the trail.
