My friend and I decided to do a run from Barrie to AlgonquinPark the past weekend. I had been keeping and eye on snowmobiling in the area and temps to see when the snow would be gone. The long range forecast was rain to sun. Finally the day of the trip it was forecast for sun and +12C. Perfect for riding.
We left Barrie on Sat morn and took ShantyBay road up to Orillia then Rama rd up to Washago. On to CoopersFalls. We were going to go down to Victoria falls but after driving down most of the rod it was closed and barricaded. We travelled up through Hosey Rapids and then Doe lake rd. We cut up a road coming out on Hwy 118. On to Black River road. When we got to the road the conditions looked good. Some wet areas but really no snow on the road. We too off feeling the Adventure we had come for but wasn’t long before conditions changed. There started to be snow on the road. There was always a path through but the road was soft and there were Frisbee size sink holes.

Guess I should say I was on a KLR and my friend on a 800 GS
    [IMG]
Well as the road got softer I ended up dumping my bike. Ok twice. WE kept running the road until we got out to RilLake road. Now from here on in I haven’t been on the cottage roads but had a good Idea and a Gps. We folled Ril until we got to PaintLake road which takes us pretty close to Dorset. In to Dorset for lunch and see if we can get some info from locals. Doesn’t seem like anyone knows the roads. We were going to hook up with Trout Spawn Rd and take it to Hwy 60. I haven’t been on this road for over 20 years.
We ran the cottage roads which I had been used to up to Trout Spawn Lake Rd.

The road looked wide open and only snow in the bush. Well you know the farther you go the worse it gets. We started to run into more and more snow.

No path through and the snow was getting softer. There was on long down hill all snow. I used my feet as outriggers and coasted down all the way no problem. At times trying to go through this stuff it would grab your front wheel and shove you right into the ditch.
After about and hour and a half we were at the end of the road. There was a section that was about a foot of snow and 500 + feet long. We had one guy drive and the other push the bike through this slop.
We were out on Hwy 60 now and only 10 min from the West Gate house.
We headed to Mew lake to set up camp and hot showers. My other friend just bought a Vstorm and met us at MewLake.

I use my KLR as a clothes dryer.

Temps started to drop but we had a great fire and a few brown pops.
The temps dropped down to -5C that night and the edges of the lakes and puddles froze again. We got up the next morning had some breakfast and headed into Dwight for gas then Huntsville for Tim Horntons.
It was a great overnighter and no bugs.

Wow, looks you guys had an adventure!

I've ridden Livingston Lake Rd before but didn't realize you could go all the way up to Hwy 60, until you mentioned Trout Spawn Lake Rd which I just looked up on Backroad Map Books. Definitely going to be riding that one this season, but when its a little warmer.;)

Kudos to you for winter camping!

Nice Ride Report RR - I explored the east side of Algonquin 3 or 4 years ago, found it very interesting. Laird, Imnothing and I rode from Harcourt to south of Bonnechere mainly off-road 2 years ago and enjoyed that area as well. I hope to go back up to explore and camp east of Whitney again this summer.

I'm always up for an exploration ride. I'd really like to hook up all the roads but try to stay out of the snowmobile trails. We've gotten into some nasty stuff for the bigger bikes.

Troutspawn was cleaned up in the last year or so for renewed logging, still a fun fast gravel road but it used to be a bit more entertaining with water crossings etc.

The road is now about 10 feet above this swamp, ignore the man looking for his bike:)

Me coming to help, damn rocks!

Good report, I recognize many of those roads from the bike and sled.

Many of the roads are now changing from logging use to new cottages along the many lakes. It is a great run to cut a lot of the busy roads out. I'll be back in a mth when things dry up.

It should be dryer but, the black flies should be out! Keep in the loop if heading up in that area.

Yup bug season should be in full swing. I learnt to always pack a bug jacket. If you ever break down in the bush the bugs will drain your body fluid.

    That's a great idea!

Last year when I rode a section of the Ontario TCAT (specifically the rail trail from North Bay to Capreol ) I got a rear blow out and because of the heat (in the 30's) I had to remove my riding jacket and T-shirt. The dear flies and mosquitoes had a hay-day with me!

Definitely going to be carrying a bug jacket during the early riding season just for that reason alone.

Where is the trail head for the rail line from N. Bay to Capreol? I want to explore around Caerol sometime.

Just click on "Tracks and Routes" post on this website, than click on "Some Northern Tracks". You will find my TCAT track which you can upload or click on the link for "Everytrail.com" which will show you my track laid out on google earth with photos as well. Follow my track from North Bay along Hwy #17 to Riding Stable Rd where I turned off heading north. A short distance up that road and you hook up with the rail trail which will tack you into Capreol. Read my warning there about the 2nd or 3rd rail trestle, its a dangerous crossing.

I can't get in as it says private. It is probably because I am an OFTR membership.

Your right, I did not realize you can actually download the tracks directly from EveryTrail.com, although you need to create an account first.
