Though we Northumberland club members have been rather quiet about our upcoming Weslemkoon Trail Ride we have been diligently working on same. I guess we are better at putting on events than talking about them.

Weslemkoon, a funny name but once memorized it’s kind of catchy. Northumberland Trail Riders discovered this gem area and are hosting our third trail ride in the area. Understandably, the more we ride the area the more trails we find and this year riders will notice an improvement from previous years.

What is the terrain like? Well, it is Northern Ontario where the terrain is rock, sand, rock, usually some water, more rock and most of the thoroughfare consists of two-track forest trail and access roads. Very little single-track exists and what can be found is usually somewhat difficult.

Weslemkoon is roughly the same latitude as Calabogie and riding here is reminiscent of earlier Calabogie Boogie trail rides.

This years ride is roughly 140 klm divided into morning and afternoon sections. The morning’s route is 85 klm with three optional ‘pink’ sections and two easier ‘green’ shortcuts.

Sunday three members and I rode the morning loop with a chainsaw and cleared any trees that might be an impediment.

Aditionally, the DS ride from the Cobourg area to Weslemkoon on Saturday Aug 13 is still being planned for a limited number of riders.

Any questions about Weslemkoon, post them here and we will try to answer in a timely fashion.

For anyone that hasn't done this ride, it is one of the best kept secrets out there. Lot's of cool trails & apparently the water levels are down this year, so not much worry of wet feet. This ride is very doable on most sizes of adult Off-road & DS bikes up to 650cc and is still doable for those on bigger bikes who are a bit more adventuresome.

    Hi,
My son & I are thinking of signing up. Two questions:

He's on a YZ 125 with Pro Circuit Type 296 Muffler (supposedly quiet), Pretty sure it's slightly quieter than stock. I think his range is around 80km.

My bike (Husky WR 144, stock muffler) is probably only good for about 90km, haven't really pushed it...

Are these bikes quiet enough? Do we have enough range to get 'er done?

    Thanks,
    Eric

Eric, as long as the mufflers are freshly repacked you should be okay with sound levels.

As to fuel range, we will have an optional gas at 65 klm. Just bring a second gas can.

A bit overdue but wanted to say thank you to all the organizers and volunteers . It was an excellent ride, well marked and plenty long enough that I'm still sore today.

For those that have not done this, you are missing out on a great piece of the province and a very well planned event.

Thank you once again ladies and gents from the NTR, for the ride and excellent trail side lunch.
