Soo to cut a long story short..The shrew started an overheating problem whilst i was doing the Tcat this year. Determined to press on, i purchased an Honda XR650L 2015 So i could finish at Kenora rather that give up and waste time already booked.

All went well until i got a call from my insurance company wanting an extra $550.00 because the Honda XR650L is a ristricted bike!!!! This bone shaker for over $1000.00 for insurance? Am i missing something? Is there a different honda i could have confused this with?

Anyone able to shed some light into this please help as i have a white and red elephant in my Garage. Totally confused.

The rates are usually based on cc's and vehicle class losses. It may be rated worse than the KLR. Talk to your agent, they should be able to explain how the KLR and XRL compare. Maybe they looked up the wrong machine when quoting you.

Can you find out what "restricted" means?

Thanks Neil, I followed your advise and called them with that very query. Response: Echelon no longer insures your category of bike. We use another insurance company and they will insure it for a smidge over $1000.00. Feel free to call around for better.

For a perspective i clarified that i was paying the same for my 1400 Concours as intact the other insurance they use are asking for this bone shaker. Gladly almost the end of riding season so may figure what bike will work for me over the winter. I must say Neil.. Thank you for helping me with this bike quest. It has been a bitter sweet experience between all the ones i have had a priviledge to own and not been able to keep.

Having owned the Honda..I know the shrew and i are headed for a divorce and in the maintime, i am having an affair with a 650 Versys. Thanks again Bud.

Call another insurance company (that's not underwritten by the same company). The 'restricted' lists are arbitrary risk assessments made by each company's arbitrators... at one point I had a company tell me GS500 was restricted...
