A while ago I asked Kirk Norris about types of motorcycle insurance. He said the manually entered "recreational use" (or whatever it's actually referred to as) is no longer available. It's either offroad (green plate) or onroad (blue plate). Please let us know if you learn anything concrete about this. Maybe it's something that continues if you already have it, but is not available to new customers.

I'm with statefarm as well and have approached them a couple of times with this topic, and my broker at least, will not insure a blue plated bike with an offroad only policy.

I'm with Nicole Mccann (chose them based on a link from the OFTR website)

Hey, Done this before without issue and I am with State Farm. It kinda like suspending your insurance on your classic for the winter. I just simple told my agent that I would not be re insuring the bike for the road but would still use it for trail and private property, for the season and told them that if anything changed I would notify them as such. No problem....they do not care what you carry as far as the ownership blue/green just as long as you have some kind of public liability on it for your and the property owners peace of mind.

For any new business, my broker requests a photocopy or scan of the vehicle registration.

Something to think about though...the insurance company data bases are now accessible by MTO. They can now confirm your insurance information when issuing plates and renewals. Somebody at the MTO might at some time figure out how to cross reference blue/green plates with insurance coverage. #-o

    Perfect timing for this discussion.
I'm trying to decide how to deal with a blue plated bike that will only be used off road for now, but I want to maintain the future potential for enduro use.

Does anyone have experience making a claim for an incident with a green or blue plated offroad bike?

You need a new broker. Never been asked for anything like that in 30 years with SF

    "PITA"

    Pain in the ass? :D

Maybe Personal Income Tax Act., not sure how it would relate to bike insurance.

Ken, your first guess is correct (Chef is correct too).

    Hey Chef
It should be possible, but you may have to approach a couple of different State Farm brokers. Some aren't even aware of the off road policy (usually in the $120 range). They will need a vin#, and possibly a photo of the bike. You may not even be required to provide the actual ownership document. They are insuring you for off road use and if you get caught or something happens on the road..... You're on your own.
What I'd like to know is : how many claims are actually ever made? Are most people insuring off road to have a pink slip that they can produce if they get stopped?
My broker showed me the breakdown of the off road policy. $18 was the liability portion. Most of the rest was for injury related costs.
Seems like we are sometimes insured to death!

Kirk Norris mentioned that he has never had a claim made on an offroad motorcycle policy.

My local rural SF agents wanted a photocopy of the ownership and pics of the bike proving it didn't have any street creds on it before offroad insuring it.

 I love how each State Farm agent has different requirements.
When I switched my policy over to off road, head office wanted a photo of my VIN.

They asked for photos of the bike and the VIN. Can't remember if they wanted a copy of the registration but they probably did.

I don't mind since I ride around town on it and do some back roads tours on the concession roads in Markham when I can't get to the trails.

I was told this also by my State Farm Agent, three years ago, and that I would be paying blue plate rates the next time I renewed. Everytime I get the renewal it's been at the original rate.....even went down a bit.

Not to mention that every time you renew your registration at MTO, you have to declare that it has the liability coverage required by law. If you have blue plates but only have off-road insurance, and you get stopped when operating on a road, you could be treated the same as if you had no insurance at all -- and you could be charged for the false declaration, too. (Same as for a registered car that is sitting in your driveway uninsured, should you happen to take it for a quick scoot around the block)

Murphy's law, of course, would have all this become apparent when something unfortunate has happened, like an accident.

My initial inquiry to Meloche Monnex suggested that liability coverage on a blue plate bike would include off-road operations (to be confirmed when I actually insurance and plate the bike). I didn't ask about collision coverage, since my bike and I are both approaching 'vintage' status. YMMV.

I asked my broker to check with Jevco about this; the answer was: "yes, offroad operation is included".
