Anyone making a trip to Hatfield McCoy this spring? It has been on my list for a bit...thinking about going in April. I had a place booked last year but the rest of my group hat to bail for one reason or another. I almost went by myself but the closest group from Ontario there on the same weekend was an hour away from where I was staying and it didn't seem like a viable emergency management plan in case I ended up with a "Bob in Tuscon" situation!
I'm planning on being there mid March, likely around the 12th-16th. My son is going to a program in Roanoke Virginia, i'm going to drive him down and then head over to Hatfield McCoy for a few days of riding, no set plans yet beyond that. Dave
We had a ball last year, I would highly recommend it! Not sure if we are going back this year though. We rode Rockhouse and BearWallow trails, mostly green and some blue trails, some of the 450s tried some blacks and single track and it looked nuts. I will say the DR650 was not ideal for this but its what I have and I had a blast anyway, still lots of good riding on the big bike though, so I wouldn't not go, just gear her down and lighten it up as much as possible, lotsa climbing on these trails. A plated 450 is likely a good choice for the variety of terrain, some seriously gnarly stuff there. Everywhere you go there is a large drop off to one side and usually a steep bank on the other.....good line is usually closer to the edge  , great fun!! Cheers, Todd
Last year I planned to stay at the Blue Goose in Matewan. Anyone heading to that area? Hear there was some good single track. However, it would be the first ride of the year for me so some open cruiser trails with good scenery would be great too. Any suggestions for a low stress riding area with a bit of single track?
Hi there I would definitely be up for this trip. Retired now so flexible on time. Have space for one other bike in truck from Wiarton if needed. My x games days are done but any easy, moderate trails or back-roads are doable. I will monitor the thread for possible dates etc. Thanks Phil
I'm now confirmed to be in Virginia from March 9th to March 20th. I will be driving down with my son and my bike, arriving on the 8th of March. I plan on riding the 9th or 10th to the 14th or 15th, hopefully some people will come down during that time and we can get a ride in together. Dave
You're going this coming weekend? I've been trying to plan a four day off-road trip and have been looking at Talladega Forest area in Alabama, watching the weather carefully as they've been hit with snow and cold temps all winter long. I'd rather not drive as far as Talladega, Alabama so your planned area of riding would be closer to home provided the weather agrees. So given the snow and cold, are you still going this coming weekend and if yes, would you mind reporting back to us on the conditions? I am trying to plan for two weekends from now... Thanks
I just loaded the KTM into the back of the pickup an hour ago, getting all my gear ready. New helmet, getting the QuickStrap set up. Weather is supposed to be not too bad next week, no idea what the snow on the ground will be like until I get there. I'll be sure to take pictures and let people know how things are. If i can pull it off and the trails allow i'm hoping to ride a number of sections of the HM trail system next week, get as much seat time in as I can! Dave
Have a great time - safe travels. Please do let me know what it's like there this time of year; if the weather is good and the rising isn't all snow, I'd consider going there instead of all the way to Alabama. Thanks
Dave, have you come back yet? I am desperately looking for info on the riding conditions there - looking to leave on my trip this coming Sunday and need to decide quickly between Hatfield McCoy area or Alabama depending on weather, ground conditions (snow, mud, etc.)... Thanks
Conditions are pretty good, just finished 4 days of riding. Some of the single track trails are marked "no entry", but i would so 90%+ of the trails are open now, and more should be open by the time you get here. Had a blast, a lot of water puddles, nothing too deep. Dave
