Ok it's offseason and we are all bench racing or tinkering with our bikes. I am seeing several Facebook posts a day of people nominating others to post a picture of them riding their bike and we need more action on our website and facebook page.

At the bike show the most popular question asked at our booth was "what DS bike should I buy and what do I need to add" and the second most popular was ""were can I ride my bike".

I would like to start a thread on the topic of types and kinds of dual sport bikes we have in the club and that kind of riding they are commonly used for . I will start the thread off and feel free to follow my lead!! I will most likely start the same thing on the club Facebook page soon . The goal is to provide visitors with a reference of popular DS bikes, who rides them where we ride them..

Bike #2 2000 KTM300EXC - Stock other then new everything and a recluse clutch and street plate and lights!

    Mike, 40 years young.

Bike 1, 2013 DL650 Vstrom, used for touring, gravel road running, and light offroad with the occasional excursion into places the bike shouldn't be.

Edit... Vstrom is gone. Just riding the Z now.

Bike 2, 2009 DRZ400 which I use to ride in slightly more offroad areas than the Vstrom -- although I have been referred to as a dusty rider (vs dirt rider) as I tend to avoid lots of mud, sand, etc..

Favourite rides: any ride is a good ride, but my favourite is exploring an area I've never been before and finding a way through... more adventuring/roaming/ramblin' as opposed to parking at a tract and ripping up the single track.

Like this ride up to the Manitoulin Rail Trail, for example... didn't know exactly where to get on or how far it went, figured it out. Not a challenging ride by any means, but great scenery, no traffic, and was interesting to explore:

Bike is a 2014 Sherco 250 SE R 2T, have it set up perfect. Second bike on the way, 2013 Yamaha WR450, will pick it up in a couple weeks. Low hours, ordering parts now to get her sorted out. Spend my time riding all parts of the Ganny from single track to forest road cruises.

Rob 47. My current bike is a 2015 KTM 250 XC. Unfortunately last summer was too hot to ride as much as I wanted to but still managed to put 60 hours on her mostly at the Ganni and a little bit of early-season riding at Newtonville.

I ride mostly at my parent's farm because it is close. I also enjoy Simcoe County and riding the Canadian Shield at the cottage.

I'm not surprised... guys in their 20's and 30's are likely scrounging every penny to afford a down payment, pay off the wedding, pay off the student loans, having kids, etc etc...and can't afford to have a bike on top of all of that.

A younger guy I work with, a Korean guy, is all excited about dirt biking, asking me about brands, where to ride, etc etc... and then he starts thinking about his two daughters and laments that maybe in 7 or 8 years he'll get a bike.

I can only afford to have two bikes while being 10 to 15 years younger than a lot of guys here because I never bothered to have kids. D.I.N.Ks :)

    Bike #1 : 2007 KLX 250, basically stock.

    Bike #2 2016 KTM 200xcw

All I really do now is race and the odd ride with friends in the woods or MX track. XC's and enduro's with Offroad Ontario and MX with Steel City Riders.

'05 R1150GS Adventure. I've taken this bike all over North America. Canada coast to coast a couple times, south to Mexico, north to Alaska. She's been real good to me, no issues that I didn't 'earn'. Living in a rural area, she spends more times in the dirt than on the pavement unless we're on a trip. And when we're on a trip, it's to go to the dirt there. Spend a lot of our time running the old rail trails.

You nailed it Visser, my favorite ride is any time I can get out of the house!

Completely stock. Went from being a DINK with five bikes to going back to school for a year and having two kids. Now I am happy just to get out to the bush at my shop to ride for a couple hrs when the kids are in bed! Before that it was multi day trips up north. But. .. one day it will all come back to me and hopefully the girls will be trailing right behind me!

YUP I too know many people who can't quite squeeze it into the budget unless a great deal comes along.

The 1994 FE350 picked up last spring in the restore process, parts coming from England, the FE 450 2006 WEC, is the weapon, tons of usable power, and revs like a two stoke. And last but not least, the 1990 DR 350L hardly ridden, few hours total, but a great bush bike.

In a past life we did most of the OO Races and Enduro's , but after knee replacement, we just ride around on at Pt. Groudine which is native lands, but supports a Eco park for hiking and camping, and the surrounding crown lands. And 75 acres of bush and field on a farm that we play on from time to time.

Bike above was my ride for the past 8yrs (2008 KTM 250xcw).
Next week I pick up my 2017 KTM 300xcw.
I am 47. Feel like I am 20 when riding and 80 when done riding...
I love being on 2 wheels and do most of my riding at Steel City Riders club and Ganaraska (it's a real treat to ride here).
I usually do a weekend at Highland Park Resort in Georgia for spring training in Feb and try to ride in Colorado once a year.
I have 3 boys (all began riding at age 3-4) so I got back into riding at 40 after a hiatus from my teens.
Luckily my wife is cool with me doing some away riding as she says I am less grumpy afterwards.
Cheers to an awesome 2017 riding season!!!

One of the all-time great Dual Sport bikes - the Suzuki DR350SE and one of the last ones made - a low mileage 1999 model.

    DR_3727.jpg

I'm Bob - 72 years old, but that's 43 in "motorcycle years" for me! Born into a motorcycle racing family, I started riding my father's full size race bikes around 10 year old and rode street, off-road, track (Brands |Hatch, actually), and trials in England until I emigrated to Canada in 1971. Career, plus no lane-splitting, ended my motorcycling but I resumed when I retired at 54 in 1999 - hence a 29 year lay-off from bikes.

My next bike was found by using the ODSC Mailing list in 2000 (website was rarely used back then) and was a '94 DR350SE. Since then I've had 2 KLR650's, a 650 V-Strom, a F650GS Dakar, a DR650SE and two '99 DR350SEs. I cannot give enough praise to the 99 DRs - big enough to cruise over the limit on freeways, little enough to ride single-track in Ganaraska, and comfortable enough to do a 4000 Km round trip to a Rally in Asheville, TN. I've made numerous 3-4 DS Trips within Ontario where you book a hotel, take the long way there, drop the luggage and then hit the trails. I'm down to one low mileage '99 DR350SE which I found on Kijiji with 5000Kms on the clock a year ago in almost mint-condition for $2700, and I'll NEVER sell it - I'll leave it in my will to some lucky ODSC member :)

I don't think I'll ever give up motorcycling so I recently bought the next best thing to a DS bike - a MX-5 ...

    MX-5 Creemore.jpg

I did a few Creemore runs in it last fall and used most of the same gravel backroads I use on the bike - I skipped 5th Line though ;) . I just bought a small, light trailer for it so I can take my DR350 to places that are great for bikes and sports cars - anyone up for Colorado in September?

    TrialsBikeTrailer.gif

I've been extremely lucky in life and appreciate being able to travel widely in N America with my RV, motorcycle(s) and mountain bikes and visit all the top riding areas. I've probably covered about 200,000 Kms riding Dual Sport bikes (mainly the 350's) and really see no need for these huge ADV bikes that are so popular. As new DR350's aren't available anymore, I'd look at a Honda CRF250 Rally if I needed another bike.

I cant just ride one type of bike. Everyone of my bikes offer something different. From the ganny to the Hatfield McCoy trails in West Virginia to the Mountains of Tennessee or the vintage trials circuit. Its all good.
