Re: Bethany - 2014 I have updated the itinerary for the ride, please see the start of the thread for details. We have decided to postpone the ride by 1 week to May 3rd to give another week for the snow & ice to melt and the flooding in some areas to recede.

Re: Bethany - 2014 Hi Everybody. Just joined the forum a couple of weeks ago. I am from Belleville and have been enjoying the spring riding between Bancroft and Belleville so far this year. I am planning to attend the Bethany ride on May 03. I will be riding solo to the staging area. Obviously some of you have been riding together for a while and have organized groups. If I arrive solo, am I correct in assuming that I will be placed with one of the groups during staggered staging? Looking forward to meeting some of you!!

Re: Bethany - 2014 Hey Bartman. Welcome. It's a pretty loose ride really. No sweeps and no real plans or arrangement as to who rides with who. I would suggest posting up what you ride and an idea of what you like (ripping through everything wfo or a more moderate pace - lot's of mud or something a little less demanding) and someone will be more than happy to have you ride along. There's a pace and style for everyone.

Re: Bethany - 2014 John, Derek and I pre rode most of what is going to be the Bethany Big Bike Ride. The ride from Port Perry around Rice Lake to Bewdley (lunch stop) was approx. 160 km ... We covered it in about 2.5 hours. The ride is a mix of gravel, pavement and a couple of road allowances. The allowances are pretty easy but also have really easy go arounds. The ride is pretty much suitable for all if you are comfortable on gravel. This ride might be a good option for newer riders on big and small bikes and riders who don't want to slog their big bike through mud. I rode it on my Dakar with track masters which was complete overkill, especially on the pavement. We are hoping to see a good show of bike bikes. Maybe John and Derek can chime in with their thoughts.
Re: Bethany - 2014 I did a little scouting around just south of Bethany today and the trails/unassumed roads were not that bad. The west end of Solanium had some snow sections on it as well as the south end of Dranoel. Don't know if these are in the ride but another couple weeks and the snow should be gone completely.
Re: Bethany - 2014 I picked up another old KLR, Chef. Maybe I will give the big bike route a look. I don't like mud at the best of times, but really hate it when on the 650!
Re: Bethany - 2014 As Chef said, great pre-ride today on the big bike route. Nothing too challenging but still enough variety to keep it interesting. Mostly pavement, a fair bit of gravel and a couple of easy unassumed roads. I did it on my Tiger 800 with stock 90/10 (street/dirt ratio) tires (Pirelli Scorpion Trail). http://www.ridermagazine.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/08/web-fPirelliScorpTrail.2.jpg Similar to what you'd have on a stock V-Strom. Hope to see a big turn out for both the regular DS ride and this new big bike ride. Be part of this classic ODSC event!
Re: Bethany - 2014 Having the big bike option is a great idea. I have been on other Bethany rides and had a great time, but sometimes you just don't want to wrestle a machine through the mud.
Re: Bethany - 2014 I still have the street tires on the 690 from last fall's trip and enjoyed today's ride making out incident free, there certainly is some nice scenic views of East Central Ontario, including Rice Lake. Thanks to Charles, Rob and Eric for pre-riding the primary route and Kevin and Derek for pre-riding the Big Bike route. Mike Schorpp is compiling and test riding a route from the GTA up to Haugens for Big Bikes as well. These rides just don't organize themselves, thanks for all the effort put forth by the folks who stepped up to help! I will clean up the GPS files and post them in the week before the actual ride. John
Re: Bethany - 2014 Hey Trenton. It's a Go-Pro Hero 2 set at 60 fps. I've been pleased with it but the one thing that drives me nuts is never really knowing if it's on or not. I think I'm soon going to get the wi-fi backpack and remote. I believe newer models come with that and I would highly recommend it. Charles
Re: Bethany - 2014 So true what you say about not knowing if the go prp hero 2 is ACTUALLY on. I have missed some good video as a result of this. Or ended up with a pic instead of a video! The new models do correct this issue.

With OFTR rides, you can ride alone because there always bikers behind us eventually (plus sweepers). Can we do that with this ride or you don't suggest this? Trenton DRZ400S
Re: Bethany - 2014 I don't think the ride will be arrowed. There will be a gps route made available a few days before. People assemble at the start and bikes leave in kind of a staggered format to try to reduce the dog plies at the rougher spots. Most people just group up at the start area. Everyone is helpful and many don't mind taking another rider in to their group. Have fun, good to see you back.
