I just tried my Google phone software that was available as of today...wow...works great. If you have a GMail account it pops up a little add for you to download the software. Two minutes later you're in business. Free, unlimited calls within North America for free for the rest of 2010. 8)
i have a gmail account, but don't see anything about Google phone. Where did you download the software from?
When I opened my Gmail tonight there was a pop up window which appeared and prompted me to download the software. Maybe you have a pop up blocker stopping it...I'm sure there must be a link to it from Google's main site though. EDIT: OK...found it: http://www.google.com/chat/voice/
I got a magicjack so its good for 5 years for $50.00. You can take it with you when you travel as well. Canada and USA are all local calls.
it works well. no issues so far. The two things that may be a draw back for some is you computer needs to be on for it to work. If you computer is off or if you are on the phone it will take a message and send it as a .wav to your email. The other thing is that it will not allow the police to see your location if you make a 911 call. I use my cell phone most of the time and i have a home security system with satellite link that will work if i need to contact 911. Randy
What if your computer has been severely compromised as a result of downloading material from unsavory websites? Will Magic Jack clear up these issues like a course of penicillin clears up a....ah...never mind.
"Magic Jacking" while on the internet is inherently virus free as you are (typically) all alone while you're doing it.
Google also has free 411 (information directory and connects you) for FREE 1-800-466-4411 I use it all the time and it works fine!
Magic Jack also have a new jack that plugs in directly to the router. costs about $50 a year(still a 10th of what Rogers charges) , lets you keep your phone no. , and is great for people with no fixed computer at home.
