The incandescent light bulb or incandescent lamp is a source of artificial light that works by incandescence (a general term for heat-driven light emissions which includes the simple case of black body radiation). An electrical current passes through a thin filament, heating it until it produces light. The enclosing glass bulb prevents the oxygen in air from reaching the hot filament, which otherwise would be destroyed rapidly by oxidation.

I thought when energy is put into a florescent material (usually from the electromagnetic spectrum) it is the electrons in the florescent material that jumps up to the next energy level. Then because the electron is not happy being in this new higher energy level it jumps back down to where it feels nice and safe and normalized. When the electron jumps back down to the lower energy state it emits a photon (light) in the visible spectrum.

Is this the same mechanism that the filament light bulb uses to emit light? I will go read the link now.

The processes by which light is actually emitted in both fluorescence and incandescence are exactly the same. It’s the excitation of the emitting atoms that is different. Fluorescence is a stimulated emission of a long wavelength photon by a shorter wavelength photon at low temperatures. Incandescence happens due to very high temperatures usually caused by electron collisions. Either way the light is as a result of a captive electron’s decay from a higher energy orbital to a lower energy orbital.

Ok, as the original post has taken a bit of a turn from its possible joke beginnings to actually some truth to it, I'll pose a question that I've thought of to those like scientific minds like Bill and David Suzuki.
Since the ungreen thought of having to dispose of the mercury in dead fluorescent bulbs didn't seem to have any affect on all this marketing push to fluorescent....
Now, this may only apply to canadian winters, but has anyone actually studied or know the actual energy savings gained when all those standard light bulbs are basically little 40-100 watt heaters providing btu's that would otherwise have to be produced by an electric or gas furnace ?
Our kitchen fully lit has about 700watts of potlight heat being generated which is enough to warm the floor nicely in the room above it. When the temps drop below -20 I leave a couple garage lights on and it actually warms up the insulated garage several degrees. In fact I've put a worklight under the hood before in -30 temps and it worked almost as good as a block heater. No I'm not heating my house with light bulbs.
Those fluorescent light bug my eyes anyway.
