Hey guys last weekend I was able to chisel out some time to start doing some looking at the new dr. I pulled the plug to see what it looked like and it was black as christmas coal. So running rich right... I decided I would pull the carb apart and take a look to see what jets etc. are in it. I am pretty sure that they have been changed at some point. What was odd though was that when I pulled the bowl off I found a small piece of brass rolling around... So does anyone have any ideas on what it is? pic below. Also for you guys that have owned/ do own, what jets and settings do you feel work best.

Thanks for the reply. It may well be although I am pretty sure that piece was in. I will have to take a look later. Also thanks for the blow up.

Part no. 46 looks like a good choice for the mystery piece. If #21 (main jet) screws into the carb, #46 might be there to help direct fuel flow to the main jet. The bike would probably run OK with it missing.

I had a problem with my DR350's running too rich and the probloem was the O-ring seal on the brass Float Needle Seat. The O-ring drys out and cracks after time and the gas by-passes the O-ring when the float needle is closed. Part #24 on above link.

Thanks for the responses guys. I am hoping to play in the shop over the next couple of nights. Bob I will check that O-ring out, I wouldn't have thought of that. But it makes sense. The Jets/settings that are set on the carb at this point are (according to the manual) a mashup of the three different carb setups. Fortunately with the weather so warm. I will be able to make some adjustments and go ride it!

    Merry Christmas Everyone!

Opened up the bowl on the carb. Definitely not part #41. The random piece is way to small.
Bob the o-ring looked good although it did look thin. Is that normal?

John - the float bowl O-ring is quite small - 6-7 mm diameter. Not sure what you mean by "thin", but the cross-section of the rubber needs to be round - i.e. no "flats" worn on it. My problems were the the 1st failure ('99 DR350 with about 50,000 Kms and about 8-9 years old) was a dried out and cracked O-ring. The 2nd failure (different '99 DR350 with about 6,000 Kms and 16 years old) was that the O-ring has gone stiff and had residue on it ("varnish" from the gas?) so I changed it. They are only a few $ and still available at Suzuki dealers. There's also DR350SE carb rebuild kits on Amazon quite cheap.

I've got the carb off my "old" DR350 right now so I can check out various things for you and take pictures for you if there's anything that would help.

Thanks Bob. I would say that it is in good shape. It feels fine not dried out, but like you said they are cheap as can be so well worth the replacement. I know you have had your share of time with a 350 in your grips so you may here from me on the carb and more. Thanks for the offer. Do you know what jet sizes/needle settings you are running?

I've never changed them so I presume they are stock.

BTW, is your bike a DR350 (i.e. Enduro) or a DR350S (i.e. Dual Sport)? They have different carburetors. Mine are both DR350SE models (E was for Electric Start, introduced in 1994).

I have the Suzuki Factory Service Manual if you need it. I also have the Clymer Manual.

    Specs:
    Carb: Mikuni TM 33SS - DR350, Mikuni BST 33SS - DR350S
    Main Jet: 132.5 DR350, 135 DR350S.
Needle clip position: 3rd - both models.

After way to many guests and a few ruff days on the couch, I was able to get out and look at the carb again. I have ad 350S with the BST33ss carb. I can't tell what the main jet is, the markings seem to be not showing. I looked in the Factory service manual and compared to it the rest of the jets are all over the map.

    Needle clip was 3rd
Pilot jet is 40 (standard for E22?Germany?)
One air jet looks like a 1.3(stock 1.2 I think?)
the other air jet I can't get out so I am not sure

I may buy the stock jets and try them. That being said I don't really have any seat time with the bike, I am mainly basing this off the fact that the plug was black as coal.

Do you have the stock tank? What sort of km are you getting on a tank? I am thinking about putting a bigger tank on. Just weighing out options of what farkels I want to do over the winter.

Hey John, working on my Mint 1990 DR 350 trying to get it to start better cold, leave the #40 pilot or go bigger, mine came with a 37.5 and a 127.5 main jet. just waiting for some more jets to come in so I can play with it more. All mine are still stock and I have two carbs, both Mikuni TM 33SS. One brand new and the one that came with the bike, the gentleman that own it before replaced the original. when he tried to get it going after 23 years with gas sitting in it.

I have read in other places that people said the 40 made it a little easier to start so we will see I may leave it.
2 pumper carbs! Let me know if you want to part with one depending on the price I may be interested. (I haven't looked to see what they are worth or availability). Like I said earlier I am trying to decide what all to sink money I into on this bike.
I wish I could say mine was near mint but alas it is not. It is in relatively good condition though and I hope that after the winter it will be shinning like a new penny... for at least one ride!

I have a Clarke tank that claims to be 4.2 gallons/15.9 litres but I've never managed to get more than 14 litres in it. The stock tank is 9 l so that's quite a bit extra, although some of gas is almost unusable due to the petcock being higher than the lowest gas. It's colour is Natural so you can easily see the gas level.

I get 75+mpg when riding at moderate speeds, but this drops to about 55mpg when cruising Hwy 401/Interstates at 120+kph (yes, it really does cruise at real highway speeds with stock gearing, and holding it at 7,000rpm doesn't bother me - or the engine).

The other mods I did were to add a tail rack, side racks, luggage, heated grips, and a 12V 2-pin SAE outlet.

    Check this old thread.

Bike looks good Bob! If I do get a bigger tank it will either be a Clarke or an Acerbis. I do like that the Acerbis has a petcock on both sides.

Hey John, should have parts Friday will play with on the weekend and see what works the best for me. As for the other Carb just for the parts that needed to be replaced was $132.00 from Suzuki, I will get it working on the bike and let you know what it is worth. Most likely around $150.00 to $200.00.

So bumped up the pilot jet up to a #40 and 135 main 1.5 turns on the air screw and you can start it with a couple of kicks cold.
    Nice.
