    Sound Check

Bl***y Hell - This is brilliant!

Hi All, I encourage you all to click on kids_dad's link and check the noise testing data, this is an awesome resource of sound check data for many bikes equipped with many different types of exhaust systems including after market exhaust's, you should look up your owm bike and exhaust system - these are pro sound test results and you can take them to the bank!

    Here is the link again:

MADD Sound Check: Amazingly enough the loudest bike(s) at the recent ODSC MADD ride event were Kawasaki KLR650s with aftermarket pipes. One bike came in at around 103db!

As a reminder to everyone and I'm not beating my drum here(I just want you to know and I want you to ride). All Kawasaki Trail Ride events and CMA sanctioned Enduro's require 94db or less to attend. All HS require 96db or less. When attending rides bring your stock exhaust system with you.

Check the ODSC Noise Testing Resource pages for more info, background and advice.

At the last enduro I raced in my 03 200 EXC with an FMF Turbine core silencer came in a 84db!

Now thats nice and quiet ! A great rule to inforce... in the event of a tie, the quieter bike wins.

    What's a CRF400R ?

This is good info. Explains why my 450EXC sounds so much louder than my XR400. Because it is! 85db vs. 95 db. That's a whole heck of a lot.

How much noise reduction could I expect on my 1990 YZ 125 if I install a Pro Circuit 304 ?

Stock pipe sounds way to loud, and I repacked the sucker.

The sound level data link in this thread is not available. How can I get a sound level check prior to an event? I don't want to trailer to an event and find out I can't ride because my bike is too loud. (uncorked XR650R...it will barely run on the stock exhaust so that's not an option)

Done properly, an uncorked bike doesn't need to be any louder than stock. In fact it could still work better than stock and be quieter than stock.

Bikes have to be 94db or less to participate in OFTR events. 94 is pretty generous in my opinion and bikes that seem kinda loud to me sometimes, pass the test.
John, I've heard your bike, and it would likely pass. You could probably make arrangements with one of the clubs(IE. SCORRA, HORRA, GPTR etc.) to get your bike tested sometime. Then you'll know.

For comparison, my stock TE250, which puts out pretty good HP for a 250 4-stroke(35+ at the crank, low 30's at rear wheel), blew 86db at ~5000rpm on Sunday AM. Not bad, considering the silencer has never been repacked.

I was the one with the sound meter last Sunday and must admit it is an education. The Great Pine Trail Riders used a location which is about as ideal as it comes. The area was open, on grass and the crowds and next bike in line were kept clear of the test zone. The meter was calibrated the day before and in good order.
Having said all this, I feel I must admit I feel the same bike could go through 5 times and return a different reading each time. The results would be similar but never the same. The testing is done under time and "operator" stress and isn't perfect.
However, no one reading this needs a meter to know their bike is obnoxiouly loud. Just be attentive to other bikes of similar make, model, or size and rate yours next to a well tuned, well maintained and STOCK PIPE enduro or dual sport bike.
If your 2 stroke has a sharp "CRACKLE" to the exhaust report when the throttle is snapped, or your 4 stroke has a sharp "BARK" when it is revved, or the stock pipe was tossed and a race pipe mounted, you are louder than you need be. END OF EXPLANATION.
We had only 2 bikes fail Sunday's test. I remember years back, when as many failed as passed. We are reforming the ingorant and arrogant and have each other to thank for that. Clubs like the ODSC adapted sound checks early and as usual for this crazy crew, it became a contest to see who could cork their pipes best. If only everyone handled the issue as well ....
The one guy who failed told me he has a trailer in Sandaraska Park and he rides the Gannie every week! Well, I don't think I'm alone in saying we don't care if he owns the trailer park and the Gannie, his bike was well over 94 and anyone in the area could tell so, with or without a sound meter.
As Ken Houverman said, at the Northumberland Kangaroo Court which ousted motorcyclists, a bogus exhaust sound level test presentation was used to hammer the coffin lid shut on motorcycle use.
Keep up the great work on your bikes and get chatting to anyone you encounter with a loud bike. It's our future they are screwing up.
BTW, the brand, spanking, new Chinese dual sport registered lower than our conversation before the test! The outlet on that pipe is smaller than one on a Yamaha DT200 ...... and that's small!
I guess the Communist keep more than their political prisoners quiet.
