I just discovered that the Park to Park is offering a free weekend of use to motorized traffic on May 13 and 14: http://www.parktoparktrail.org/

Yes, I know it will likely be very wet at this time of year... but you can't beat free! So who is interested?

I have already booked a hotel room as close to the trail that I could get near Huntsville... actually it is right beside Arrowhead Provincial Park, and although this room only has a single bed, the hotel says it can offer a cot or pullout or something for a 2nd guest. The room cost me $62.50 tax in...

My plan was to go up Saturday morning.... spend Saturday afternoon exploring the trail East of #11 to Algonquin and exploring that area. Sunday I would ride the trail to Parry Sound and back... then pack up and return home.

Is anyone here interested in joining? I might even be able to fit another bike in the back of the truck if you don't feel like riding up.

Also, there are two hotels right near Arrowhead both with rooms left if more people wish to join.

Many people overlook the part of the trail east of Hwy 11 which is a shame because the section after Kearney is the most interesting and challenging. Adjacent to that section are the Algonquin West ATV Trails. A Park to Park trail pass gives one access to these ATV trails too. It's possible that only applies to ATVs but it does not explicitly state that on their website so I've chosen to ignore that possibility.

The area west of Hwy 11 is not as challenging but is longer and very scenic. Sprucedale is a good place to stop for gas and food. There are some interesting ATV trails that branch off the Seguin trail very near the restaurant.

    Have fun.

    Very true!

The Park-to-Park crosses over Rain Lake Rd just behind Kearney, it is about 27 km until Algonquin Park from there. Rain Lake Rd passes through a large area of crown land and you will find many rideable trails just off the road. Keep in mind that eventually the road begins to go through the park area where of course motorized vehicles are not allowed.

I've spent lots of time riding that area, as it's one of my favorite spots plus if you get hungry you can got food and fuel in Kearney.

    Enjoy!

I'd be interested, but this time of year it might be quite challenging isn't it? Some of the water crossings are pretty deep I think.

Yeah, this is the worry, especially with all this rain.

Maybe someone who knows this trail better than I do can confirm, but I think the wetter part is closer to Parry Sound, therefore starting from Huntsville might be the best move as we could just turn around if the trail is getting to be too much.

That's the hope anyway. I have until the 11th to cancel my reservation at the hotel if the weather stays like this.

In my years of riding the trail the worst part is the section just east of Hwy 11. Its usually long and deep from what I recall.

Here is a photo with my wife in that section on her ATV.

Oops, guess I was wrong then.

I hope the rain lets up a bit at least on the week leading up to that weekend then...

Water is your friend on these rides. The best part of the Trenton Ride for Sight ride I ran was the "underwater road" part. Couldn't find the pictures I wanted but this one gives you an idea. It was 3 sections that was about a 1/2 mile long.

I don't know what to say, with all the rain coming down this week, it might be quite challenging to attempt it so soon.

I might give it a go anyway. Hell, the hotel is only $60 and if a portion of the trail is badly flooded I can bypass sections. The trail crosses a lot of roads including crisscrossing the 518 numerous times.

Just an update, the weather forecast for Huntsville is still saying rain this weekend, and the trail might be flooded, so I've cancelled the hotel room but may still go up on Saturday or Sunday, whichever day has better weather, and come back the same day.

No need to suffer two rainy flooded days just because I have a room booked.

Make sure you take a good set of water wings up, ones that can hold both you and the bike.:D

I see, please share the experience as I'm considering it for next Friday/Saturday and the guys I'm supposed to go with don't particularly like water crossings.

    Have a good time

The water was not too deep, some standing water but with a solid base so easy to get through.

The weather was good today... a bit of drizzle in the morning, sunny skies in the early afternoon... rode for 5 hours, mostly East of Kearney exploring... endless trails to explore in that area.

Looks like you had a pretty nice day. Did you meet any other riders?

Saw one red KLR coming the other way, and a few green plated bikes with no front lights. A dozen or so ATVs and SxSs.

Edit... meet as in ride with? Nope... rode alone.
