On Saturday the 16th we're running a tour of the Grand River watershed from Elora to Paris.

There will be numerous river crossings....all over old, iron bridges...too many to count! It involves the Grand, Conestoga, and Nith Rivers and as much gravel as we can find. Its quite suitable for Big Dogs.

A couple of planned highlights... Mennonite cooking for lunch, a geocache chase, and awesome photo possibilities.

We'll run past Avicious Cycle/Twisted Throttle too, in New Dundee, if you feel a need to shop.

The plan is to meet in the parking lot at the front of the Elora racetrack at 09:30 and be underway at 10:00.

Please post here if you intend on riding the Steel Bridges Tour. If we get no responses, we'll have to postpone the ride.

I would absolutely like to do the ride but it won't work for me because of the long weekend. We're heading to the cottage in Huntsville and I'm planning to ride up there... If any other weekend you can definitely count me in. The ride would be in my own back yard !

Hopefully I can answer all the questions...

Yes! Photos! We'll stop at every bridge.

Yes! Truck parking...at the racetrack parking lot (it's huge).

GPS is encouraged...as we're going to do a little geocaching on the way. I expect to have the GPS file up before Friday.

    See you Saturday.

Route is coming in at 217 km...there are about a dozen to 15 bridges and 3 geocaches to try out.

    I'm going on the VStrom...it's Big Dog friendly...probably 60/40 pavement/gravel.

Ditto on that Dennis. That was a nice ride. I counted fourteen bridges but not all of them were steel. My favourite being the West Montrose covered bridge. 195 feet long. I never new we had such a long one around here.

All in all, another nice ride escorted by Momentum. I hope the rest of you enjoyed your free gift too!

    Thanks Bruce

    Nice route today Bruce!

I stopped on the ride up in Elmira to visit ARP. I figured I'd be able to join the ride already in progress. I started following the route at 11 at the covered bridge. That wasn't too far into the ride so I figured the group wouldn't be too far ahead. So I rode. And rode. And rode. Expecting to find the group at the next bridge taking pictures, at a geocache, at Avicious Cycle, at a lunch stop. No luck. Either they had a pretty good pace going or I got ahead of them some how. In the end I followed the route as far a Glen Morris before heading to Paris then home. Missed the ride but enjoyed the route!

I couldn't make it, sounds like it was a great run.

The West Montrose Bridge is the only covered bridge left in Ontario. It actually is a hybrid as it has a steel bailey bridge from the 1940's hidden inside of it. It is hidden behind the wooden skirt that you see going half way up the interior wall. I did a rehab project on the bridge when it still belonged to the province in the mid 1990's.

Thanks for the info Cole. We actually did discuss the structure of the bridge while wandering through it and our discussion led to the belief that there must be more behind the walls.
It was a very interesting ride with the wide variety of bridges that Bruce has discovered. I am definitely looking forward to the next ride already.
