Steve asked me to jump on here to give you a better expanation of what we can do with the money once we understand the amount.

I have been contacting Municipalities where we ride and asking for any form of trails infrastructure money that we can classify as a trail project under the rules of the grant. I have arranged one municipal project for $107,000.

THe OFTR has approved grants in place that we should be able to use for about $37,000. One of the grants will provide about $12,000 for signage and new trails as follows:

Simcoe County Forest 44 new kms
    Somerville Forest 60 new kms
    Haliburton Rail Trail 11 kms
    Northumberland Forest 75 kms
    Larose Forest 20 kms
    Limerick Forest ?? kms

The grant allows for us to employ people to do work that might otherwise be volunteer based. The intention is to hire workers that are in tough situations due to layoffs and loss of jobs.

Your clubs idea for using donations is a strong one and may result in triple benefits:

    1. we get money to invest in our trails
    2. we help some of our members that are facing hard times
    3. if we raise enough funds, it will make great press for the newspapers

We have aready received pledges from your members and your club for $1,000 which we will annouce later today and put out a challange to the other clubs. I have already started to contact the manufacturers although they have already donated the OFTR portion.

The OFTR will be reviewing an estimated 200 to 400 applications in the next three weeks for the province.

    Hope that helps,

    Ken

OK i'm a poor old guy & a bit slow at times , but i see some facts i need to put down here.

    * The ODSC membership is a cheap $10.00. Way to cheap for the value i get out of the club. Perhaps a few more bucks now is a good idea.

    * I have for some reason a bunch of empties in the " Two Guys Garage"

    * I can take $20.00 worth of empties and turn them into $40.00 worth of trail work.

    * If even 200 of us put in $20.00 that would be $4,000.00 and then the government will turn that into $8,000.00 for trail work.

Looks to me like a great return , on even a small investment. What a great way to make sure we have places to ride.

It will be critical to get donations in place to leverage the proposal(s) by OFTR and ODSC. Though technically the club has until the project start and perhaps as late as the completion date to make its investment of its 50% share. Moreover, if the club is short for a goal then in kind donations can in theory be something you ask to use. I may also suggest any upcoming rides could be with a larger entry fee to ensure the club helps leverage the NTC funds in their grant applications. I need to think about how much I can volunteer to donate myself today I'm feeling a bit disappointed I'm not more involved in the bigger picture program.....a long story in its own right. :(

This would be an excellent way for all of us to get involved by donating whatever we can by cheque.

JUST GOT CONFIRMATION...The Northumberland Trail Riders just kicked in $$$500.00 smackers also!

I'm hearing rumors SCORRA wants to go head to head with us to see who can raise the most funds. Should be a great competition!

    Let's keep the ball rolling.

Some of you are making donations without posting, that's cool, but their is still a shirt (thanks to Canadaler) up for grabs for the next donation regardless of size!

my high school rugby team regularly did bottle drives and raised a ton of money. So, my group of buddies did one also, we raised $1700.00 and went to party in Montreal (aged 17!). Was a blast!

Thanks guys. I'm not around tomorrow, but will get a tally on Friday aft to see where we are at.

By the looks of it, TE450Pilot gets the shirt as he posted the next donation. Hmmm, not sure if we have 3xl's!

Have any municipalities around Guelph / Kitchener / Waterloo / Cambridge been contacted?
Can the OFTR help riders in this locale find Crown Land on which to a develop trail system?

Actually, there is a piece of crown land just west of KW. It relatively small @ approx. 200acres or less, but it's almost all forest. It probably doesn't show up on the MNR map because of its size.
