Getting this old girl ready again.....putting on a new chain. Other than buying a chain pin press is there a way to get get a pin out? I ground this head off with a dremmel but I can't push the pin through. Pete
1) Make sure you grind the "mushroomed" heads completely off both pins on the link you're removing. 2) Rotate the wheel so that the ground link is located about 1/2 way onto the rear sprocket. 3) Use a hammer and nail countersink punch to tap on the pins (left/right, left/right) and drive them out as the chain is held by the teeth of the sprocket. If you have to pound the crap out of it...stop...grind a little more if necessary but don't pound on it so much that you bend your sprocket. It should come off using this method. Note that the riveted pin end is not just peened over the end of the chain link, but is expanded a bit into the hole in the link plate so it does take a bit of force to get it to move.
And remember that any of the better chains also have a press fit master link so you need a tool to install the side plate too. Just because you have a clip style master link doesn't mean it just slides together.
The Motion Pro chain breaker I have can be used to press on the master link plate as long as you prevent the pin being pressed out at the same time. I do this with a M6x25 bolt in the hole where the pin normally gets pushed to. The more expensive Motion Pro tool has a few accessories that are used to press the plate on but a 10c bolt does the same thing Bob
