My 1995 DT sputters until the revs build up, I've tried different jetting and even a different carb, same old thing...........might I have an air leak between the engine and the carb. Anyone else experience this ??? Any suggestions?? Thanks, ROB[/b]
dt200 rob i have had this happen to my dt and it was an air leak at intake side of carb. with the bike running spray a little brake cleans around carb. and see if it affects idle or not.
Check your exhaust system for excess carbon buildup. Is there a muffler insert that should be cleaned?
If you have an air leak, ie crank case gasket you will usually overheat as the bike will run lean. Does it run o.k with the choke on? That cuts some of the air so it is a richer mix. You could do a pressure test on the engine. Plug all of the vents ect and pressurize (50psi), have a gauge in place and if you lose air quickly then spray water on the seams and look for bubbles. good luck!
DT 200 runs rough I too have a DT200 (1988). It either runs beautifully, or occaisonally keeps bogging out. 60% of the the time I can ride it all day with no problem. Sometimes, just after it gets warm, it bogs out. It will start fine, but I can't give it throttle. I'll change the plug (which is usually fouled) but it won't rev up. If I leave it alone for an hour, it is fine again. It seems to do this just as it is warming up. New air filter, new seat and needle in carb, carb cleaned and same problem. Any ideas??
Re: dt200 Odd. Air leaks at the crank seals or intake side normally cause the rpm to go up all by itself, or an erratic idle. Bogging is usually an indication of it being too rich (or not enough air... pilot setting and dirty air filter). Rubber intake manifolds get dry rot after several years, and reed valves get worn/chipped. Make sure those 2 things are right, a thorough carb cleaning/check, make sure the exhaust is not leaking at the cylinder, then start considering if its a powervalve or electrical issue.
Re: dt200 I'd have to agree with Mike on this. While it could be other things, worn or chipped reeds will cause these symptoms. Check them. Also the air filter is another likely culprit. Run without one for a brief test, too much oil or dirt will cause a rich idle mixture. The air filter foam might also be broken down. There is no way to fix this except to replace it. Test for this by trying to pull on the foam in different places. If it feels like it has no elasticity, or indeed, comes apart easily, then it’s done. Might be good idea to just pull it off and try a $15 Ready Filter if these are available for your bike. These are re-usable. I’ve used 3 of them in my son’s race bike over the last 2 years. Even after about 10 cleanings each they are still in great shape.
thanks for the advice, guys. I will look at the reeds, and I have replaced the air filter with OEM. I am thinking an electrical problem because it either runs fine, or won't go. Sometimes when it is doing the bogging out thing, I will keep trying to give it throttle. I tmight run for half an hour, backfiring occaisionaly, stalling and then just one kick will get it going again, but only at low revs. Then all of a sudden it will rev up and run great. Do you guys think replacing the CDI unit might fix it?
I had some troubles with my dt that made it seem like a fouled plug, it would backfire and bog badly then after restarting it would run fine for a while. It turned out to be the kickstart safety switch shorting intermittantly. I unpluged it under the seat and then had to join the two wires leading back to the wiring harness to complete the circuit. my dt's run fine since. good luck Stew
I just bypassed the kickstand safety switch - the bike fired right up and ran great for an hour or so! I am sooooo happy. In the past the problem has been sparadic so maybe I will have the same issue next time I try it, but that solution makes a lot of sense. I have been struggling with this for 3 years - and just bought a new bike because I was so frustrated with this one. I love this bike when it is running properly so I hope this is the fix.
