Has anyone had a Yoshimura RS3 SS full system on there DRZ400S? Just wondering what benefits you had from the change over? Also, is this system reasonably quite? I don't need to wake everone up but Id like someone thats walking on the trail to be able to hear me. I like the throaty note I herd of Don's DRZ400S sounded nice.

    Thanks.

Parts Canada doesn't list that complete system for the 400S although it is in the Yoshimura 2006 catalogue as P/N 2165500-SA (P.C. P/N 228417). They may have one left by chance as they had it in older books. Call Donald and he'll check for you to see if it is still available. The 400E system is D461AFS-SA and P.C. has it in stock and it might very well fit fine (P.C. P/N 227563).
Why do you want a complete system that lists at over $700 when a simple slip-on for $500 will provide the additional noise pollution that we hate so much and fight against!
FMF has their "Q" slip-on for $450 list and only while supplies last.
Looks like almost every DRZ400S part I looked up is "while supplies last" from Parts Canada. Is this the beginning of the end for the DRZ aftermarket?

    DRZ exhaust

    Kris

I still have the exhaust from the DRZ, it is a FMF pipe and I can hook you up on a good deal.

Now that your warranty is over, the 3x3 air box, jet kit and my pipe and your DRZ will sound better and pull harder.

Let me know, I was going to post it in the classified shortly.

    Kris,

I have the Yosh slip on. Needs considerable mods to fit the S model since it's made specifically for the E model.
I was told, for Aug/06 that the SM model Yosh would be released, which would fit the S too.
The pipe goes in conjunction with a DynoJet kit, no 3x3 air mod required.
Yes the Yosh pipe sounds absolutely amazing!! I bought mine this 06' season and the insert it now comes with is a long screen insert opposed to the older style short cup. This results to much less loudness but exact same note.

It sure is loud but its almost music to my ears..... But realisticly thats to loud for my riding areas as its close to homes and such.. But, what others are out there...I was told yoshi exhuasts are the best you can buy....

I'd say your wasting your money going for a pipe just to sound cool. Plus I doubt you'd gain much "power". Better to spend money on suspension and tires. Less sound=more ground.

What's with people and loud bikes?

I advise against this. The 1 or 2 HP you MIGHT gain is not worth it. You're not likely to gain anything but noise without a ton of more serious work.

If you do go ahead, be sure to pick up a tape recorder too. That way, when all the riding areas are closed, you can listen to the meaty roar. After all, isn’t that more important than riding?

Sorry, I don’t mean to offend, but noise for noise sake offends me, as well as those that would like to see us out of the forests.

Buy a quiet pipe if yours is too loud (ie trail riding a converted MX bike), your pipe is fine. The advice given in that last few posts is very good.

Problem is to the other 99% of the population it is just a loud bike that pisses them off.

I doubt one can be called 'the best'. They each have there own strenghts and weaknesses.

Full systems will change the way power is delivered. They can make it better or more often much worse depending on the riding you do as they trend to move the power up the rev range and hurt the low end. Most pipes are just extra noise for the casual trail rider and will provide no real benefit.
Dirt Rider this month has a review on 96db pipes. None of them would make it on my bike from what I saw.

    Others mods and such.

Im not buying the exhaust system for noise.... I just want a little more snap in the straights I also ride the bike on street and spend more time on the roads then off road. I just thought with my warranty ending in the spring I could mod it as its pretty much stock. And Ive looked at dyno charts for different systems and noticed that some are all at the top end of the rev range some are at the bottom and mid and some have it all over.

Along with the exhaust I would probably do the 3x3 and jd jet kit. We will see what happens in the spring, I am against noise but I can sneak up on people on trails and they don't even know I am behind them which is pretty cool. I do share the trails with every user, I normally stop to pass pedestrians because I always think theres kids around or a dog thats hidin in the bush.

But anyway, Ive even looked at the full Yoshi engine packages with pistons,etc.... But its pretty expensive.

    Any other suggestions?

By snap I'm going to assume you want to get better acceleration away from turns and in straight sections. For this, you want to increase your torque in the low and mid range. Please remember, doing this, like any other performance increasing modifications will reduce the overall reliability of your engine. Here is what is normally done to increase low and midrange power:

    1. Higher compression ratio. This can be done using a different piston or by shaving the cylinder/head. Do some research on this to see what is readily available and suggested for the DRZ. Be aware that this will increase your need for higher-octane gas.
    2. Of course, a big bore kit will always do wonders for snap.
    3. Open up the intake as much as possible. A freer breathing air filter, like the TwinAir, and increasing the size and amount of openings in the air box will help here.
    4. Look for an appropriate cam profile. One that increases lift and duration while minimizing intake/exhaust overlap. I believe that Suzuki use that engine in a quad too, right? The quad cam will be of that type. The issue here is that reducing the overlap will cause the top end o suffer slightly.

And here are some other options
    5. The Powernow and PowerNow Plus carb blades should improve airflow for lower velocity carb use (low to mid RPM, smaller throttle openings) and are reputed to improve acceleration. I’ve never tried them, but for $200, they get rave reviews.
    6. For wheelie snapping throttle response, I hear the Boyesen pump cover can be effective. This could be an option if the DRZ uses the ubiquitous Kehin FCR carb, but the ‘S’ model might not. Going to the FCR carb might be all you actually need here.
    7. One tooth less on the counter shfat sprocket. This will increase torque to the rearl wheel but reduce top end a bit.

Finally, probably the best solution for what you want
    8. Buy a more powerful bike.

An exhaust system is not likely to give you much in the way of real low and mid range improvement. Especially one that is more opened up. They usually work more effectively at the high end of the RPM range and actually cause that low/mid “punch” to suffer. Doing all the mods I described (1-7) will have a dramatic effect and 3-7 will probably suffice and cost less than a new exhaust can.

    Kris-

For less money than a Yosh RS3 system you can get exactly what you want and more-

Get an FCR carb package from Thumpertalk (designed for your application) and a base gasket for an E model.

This will give you about 15% more horsepower right off the bat and actually improve some of the issues with the DRZ.

You will also have to use premium fuel if you switch base gaskets.

And, you will still have a quiet bike.

    change the gearing

I struggled on tight trails with my drz400s, having to slip the clutch on tight corners and over logs etc, when I ride the trails now I slip on a 13 tooth on the front and it transforms the bike off road, kills the top speed (maybe 110km's tops) but that's plenty for a trail ride, cost me about $12.00

as for noise, my pipe is stock and it always passes the sound checks, but I really wonder how most of the other bikes pass, I can't beleive that the sound check limits are actually enforced, I was told the limit at one ride was 91 and that's exactly what my stock drz400s read (and it has less than 2000km's on it), the true off road bikes (MX'ers and Enduros) are much much louder, it seems to me everyone talks about loud pipes but nobody actually is doing anything about it

just because the pipe is stock, it doesn't mean it's quiet

Have you tried this? The reason I ask is I was told the stock exhaust was to restricted for an FCR and base gasket. Now I am curious as heck.

I talked to burned at thumper talk and he said that if i do the exhaust mod with the holesaw it would solve the problem it will make it alittle louder but nothing louder then a slip on silencer.. Im doing suspension first.

An FCR is a pumper Carb and should give you much more responsive throttle... instantaneous, twitchy, however you like to call it. It may not give more air or Power at WOT, so exhaust shouldn't matter noticeably.

Thinner base gasket, should equal more compression, again, not more air, so unless I am missing something, the std exhaust should be fine. Besides more open exhausts give the most power gains at WOT, and High RPM.... how often is your bike at these conditions?

Now open up your intake, port and polish the head, go for a big bore kit, bump the redline up a few RPM and then your exhaust is probably too restrictive.

Or be like me... smash the snot out of a stock muffler for 3 years, almost cut thru it with ice studs, run it till it "falls off the bike", then replace it.

Barry, don't forget to add kicking the exhaust with your velcro clad size 12 foot after the PD in the beatings it had.
