I’ve been thinking about this, I’ve organized a huge mtn bike demo day a bunch of years ago, we expected over 1200 people and literally the day before had to cancel due to the torrential rain that was forecasted… which thankfully actually did arrive. Forecasting for rain next weekend as well and warmer temp’s, but we know that can change. I’ll ride this Sat and/or next Saturday, but you may loose people as next Sat is the Rally Connex Training day for the small bikes (Adv Bikes are Sunday). D
So I found myself with an unexpected day off today... figured I should make good use of my time so I went out and rode the 2019 Bethany route and it was awesome. Arguably drier than previous years, though the predicted rain might change that. I rode all the main route as well as all the options with the exception of the Shields Road option ... regrettably I road the Porter Road option and spent a good hour trying to coax (i.e. dropping and dragging) my bike through the deep mud holes. I should have known better as I was riding a heavy ADV bike, so about spent myself. Overall I'd say the main route is in great shape and although there are some pretty substantial mud holes along the main route... most had options (sufficient ledge space) to bypass them and the uphill rocky sections weren't filled with washouts.
I'd agree, postponing might not be the worst idea.. it was pretty nice today but I still arrived home very wet... and quite cold. Too bad the ride wasn't today.
It's also Rally Connex Ladies Off-road Training on May 6-7. For smaller towns like Bethany, the Weather Network doesn't have data on historic average temps and POP. Port Perry seems big enough to the have the historic averages though after the 2 week's forecast. I realize it's a terrible way to predict weather but wow, those temps (16 deg C) and POP (17%) look great for May 13 or 14 compare to 6-8 deg C with 29km winds (gusting to 55km) forecasted for this Saturday (if May 13 or 14 are an option). https://www.theweathernetwork.com/c...2023&month=5&dispt=calendar-container-monthly https://www.theweathernetwork.com/ca/weekend-weather-forecast/ontario/bethany Trenton
So? Is it on or cancelled? I'd ride either day but rather not get wet. BTW, it looks like the forecast has improved a bit for Saturday. It went from 15mm to 5~10mm. Amir
Ok. I think we should postpone the ride. When the organizer is dreading managing registration in +3 degree rain and does not want to ride his own bike there is a good reason to wait for a better day. We have nothing tying us to this specific day and I think most would rather enjoy the event rather than suffer through cold temps combined with persistent rain. I have images of last week's New Jersey Supercross! That did not look fun nor was it racing. In our case, we can choose to ride another day. Although this ride only uses closed road allowances, there is also no need to dig them all up and rut them all out if not needed. New Date is Saturday, May 13th. I will update the Facebook pages shortly. Spread the word, please!
Good call on rescheduling the ride. You'll get a better turnout on a nicer day and we'll all have a lot more fun than freezing and riding wet...
Sounds good! Think I may use the time tomorrow to install my new decal kit! And LED’s on the 890! Garage time on the bikes is almost as good as riding time! D
I wasn’t able to do the ride when scheduled for the 29th but I’m now looking forward to this coming Saturday! See you then!
Looks like great riding weather for Saturday!!! Depending on the source, temps range from 19-22c and 0-20% possible rain! Near perfect! Wootwoot!! Or better yet..BraaapBraap! d
Has the GPX file been posted anywhere? I can’t seem to find it anywhere would rather not be scrambling trying to upload it late Fri night pulling my hair out!! Thanks! D
Here is the route file for the ride on Saturday. Please fill in a waiver registration and bring it with the $20 entry fee to the registration table on Saturday. We will be there at 7:45 until the riders meeting at 9:30 ish
Work called me in for overtime. I'll have to miss this one . Enjoy the ride everyone. I'll save the route and try it another time.
Really bummed, I won't be able to join the ride tomorrow... but it's a great route, lots of variety and the weather couldn't be better. Enjoy!
Hats off to Kevin for once again organizing a great day! Your efforts are greatly appreciated. The Last Place Gang
